Da'Rick Rodgers Released

Chiefs release WR Da'Rick Rogers
Adam Teicher, ESPN Staff Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Talented but troubled wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers was released by the Kansas City Chiefs just hours before they were to begin their mandatory minicamp. Da'Rick Rogers has caught only 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns during his NFL career.

Rogers, 23, was one of the SEC's best wide receivers in 2011, when he caught 67 passes for more than 1,000 yards and scored nine touchdowns for Tennessee. But he was subsequently thrown off the team for disciplinary problems and transferred to Tennessee Tech.

Rogers has been unable to make it in the NFL. He signed with the Chiefs, his third NFL team, in January but hadn't been impressive during offseason practice. The Chiefs also may have felt comfortable releasing Rogers because of the emergence of rookie wide receiver Chris Conley, who has played well in practice.

Rogers pleaded guilty in May in Indianapolis to resolve a 2014 DUI case. He was sentenced to one day in jail and six months of probation.

The Chiefs also released offensive lineman Kelvin Palmer, who recently signed as a free agent, and signed offensive lineman Tavon Rooks of Kansas State.

It's not vitriol. Some people seem to believe he's had a much more accomplished career than he's had, as if he's a Roddy White or Larry Fitzgerald or even a Dwayne Bowe.

He's none of the above. Not even close.

Personally, I don't want to see a 32 year old guy taking away reps from Wilson, DAT or Conley, all guys that have big upsides and are the future of this receiving corp.

Avant should be the fifth or six option, not the second, as someone suggested. That would be awful.

Jumping down my throat here is pointless, I'm anything but overselling the guy... but he's not just some washed up old dreg quite yet, atleast according to the coaches.

I'll take their word for it, for now.
Since when do the Coaches, or any player not give flattering comments in fluff piece articles?

And Greg Jennings actually produced at a high level before getting old and slow....not that i'd want Jennings either.

Remember....this is a guy the Chiefs passed on when he was a F/A. He went and signed some 1 year vet minimum prove it deal with the Panthers.

It wasn't until they lost Avery and realized their WR's were unproductive did they pick this guy off the scrap heap.

If they liked him that much, as much as some of you say they do, then why didn't they sign him for the vet minimum from the get-go?

He's hardly safe from the chopping block.

Reid has went on at length about Avant, its not like other guys where he just says something like "he's working his way in, getting better every day yada yada".

They have a history, Reid knows him well... he wouldn't be here, and wouldn't have been in the lineup so soon after arriving if he wasn't worth something.

You seem to have a real stick up your ass about this.

Wanna make a sig bet?

I say he atleast makes the team, do you think he wont?

Liked him so much he didn't even offer him a 1 year contract when he hit F/A.....

No, i won't bet that he doesn't make the team. He probably will.

He's the kind of player you hope can take Avant's spot.

That spot should go to a young player with promise. I don't know who that player is, or if he's even on the roster. Hence the reason i think Avant makes the team.

Reid might've been hoping/thinking guys like Avery and Jenkins would start to catch on at the time.

I don't know, but that's atleast a possibility... I do know that Reid put him on the FAST track to playing time once he arrived, and he had a few nice moments while he was at it.

We could do a helluva lot worse than this guy at #5, I seriously don't get the vibe surrounding this subject.

Does this sound like a guy CP would approve of?

There isn't a "Vibe". It's a simple discussion.

Some people think he's a productive player (when there's no evidence of that) and some don't. It's that simple.

Yes, because wasting time on a player who adds nothing to your team is always a good move.

Your 5th receiver on a run heavy team....He's going to see the bench more often than not. Might as well go to a guy who stands to get better, not one who stands to get slower.

Sad part for you (maybe all of us) is, Avant will not be the #5. Seriously doubt that, anyway.

He will rotate in as the #2/3/4.. at least, at first.

I can certainly get the concept of going with youth and potential, but sometimes, old steady and reliable is the way to go.. at least for a while.

I really wouldn't concern yourself much with this. Maclin and Kelce will be the top receiving threats. Then, there is always JC as heavy contributor in short pass and screen game... then there are a slew of rotating WR 2/3/4 and TE 2/3 that will assist.

Avant is not an exciting guy, but if he can make a few clutch plays to move the chains... all the while helping to refine the younger receivers.. we're good. There are still plenty of young receivers with potential that will see the field in 2015, and an increase in production after Avant is gone in 2016.

It doesn't matter who the receivers are guiz, with Alex's mid tier O-line, he can throw to anyone now and all passes will be caught with Ginsu-sharp accuracy!

Oh yeah, yepper theres definitely a "vibe".

And its pointlessly hovering around one particular depth player...
