When I lived in Memphis I used to travel I-40 on bus. with regularity. I've been over that bridge at least 100 times. It's a neat bridge with a lot of personality. I hope whatever is wrong with it is minor. I-40 is the most heavily traveled East/West Interstate in the US. Last edited by ChiefaRoo; 08-27-2007 at 07:49 PM.. |

Update from the Commercial Appeal. Turns out the problem is on the Arkansas side on one of the approach bridges not on the main bridge.
Officials: I-40 bridge should reopen Tuesday morning for rush hour Inspectors found support pier sunk several inches By Christopher Conley (Contact) Monday, August 27, 2007 Arkansas officials this afternoon were confident that the closed Interstate 40 bridge would be open before Tuesday morning’s rush hour. The interstate was shut down in both directions after a routine inspection this morning found a support pier on an approach bridge had slumped about three inches. Traffic was diverted to Interstate 55 in both directions. A long line of trucks queued up on I-55 heading south into Memphis. “This is just a precautionary measure to ensure that the approach bridge has not been compromised by the settlement in any way,” said Paul Degges, chief engineer for the Tennessee Department of Transportation. “We want to be proactive and take all the traffic off the bridge so that our inspectors can take a very thorough look at the structure before making any further decisions.” The problem occurred about half a mile west of the bridge at a construction area where workers are performing a seismic retrofitting. The majority of the work is being overseen by TDOT. Road crews Monday afternoon were able to reset concrete medians to divert drivers onto a portion of the roadway already improved. “We are going to be able to get it open sooner than we thought,” said David Nilles, spokesman for the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department. “We should be open by rush hour,” he said. The bridge pier settling likely happened when longer pilings were sunk for the retrofit construction, Nilles said. A bridge collapse in Minneapolis Aug. 1 sent dozens of vehicles into the Mississippi River. That bridge was undergoing repairs when it buckled during evening rush hour. |
