MEDIA REACTIONS: Chiefs Early Draft Losers on NFLN

Quote:
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs had pressing needs after a rough free agency, and they still have massive questions on the offensive line and at wide receiver. Dee Ford is a nice long-term gamble, but should start his career as a part-time player. Third-round cornerback Phillip Gaines seems more like a developmental prospect. Fourth-round RB/WR/return/cornerback/football player De'Anthony Thomas is a wild card. This was a draft in which the Chiefs needed some instant-impact players, and it's hard to see them here.

With a more productive WR group, maybe the Chiefs wouldn't have been in a situation where they had to go on the road into Indy in the Wild Card round of the playoffs… just a thought? Remember the Denver game at Arrowhead when the Chiefs blew any chance at winning the AFC West in large part because of their WR's dropping passes on virtually every passing play.

You have to look at the entire season, and the consistent theme throughout the entire season was the mediocre play, lack of production from the Chiefs WR's.

Statistically the Chiefs had the worst group of WR's in the league.

The only reason the Chiefs passing yardage wasn't ranked last was because of Jamaal Charles in the passing game.

In this scheme with this quarterback probably the best thing that can happen is Kelce getting and staying healthy and catching 50 or 60 balls down the seam Brent Celek style. This is like the Al Saunders days, where receivers are decoys and blockers first, pulling coverage away from the middle of the field, the offense runs through the tailback and the primary idea is creating mismatches through formation and motion.

I wanted/expected a receiver as much as anyone but the reality is it wouldn't have turned this offense or the guy behind center into anything other than what they are, and it may not have given us any more from the receiver position than what we'll get with who we already have. At least not after Cooks was gone.
Great post, and I understand and agree with your take as well as Parker's.

But as I pointed out earlier, I'm looking further down the road and have a problem with the scheme itself.

When JC is gone in 2 years, or when/if this current regime gets run out of town, there are going to be some dark days on offense.

This scheme can work when you revolve it around guys like Westbrook, Shady and JC. Without them, your offense is garbage - and it's not exactly easy to find those types of players.

Who were you going to draft?

Marquise Lee and Donte Moncrief, the two most-mentioned names here, had problems with dropped passes.

The bold isn't happening for at least the next 5 years, at minimum, assuming nothing outlandish comes out about Reid or Dorsey.

It's a concern but it is what it is. Andy Reid isn't going to change his scheme. That was part of the deal in bringing him here. We all knew this was coming.

They're not getting run out of town anytime soon. And as long as they're here, I don't think it's much of a concern. As much as you say it's not easy to find guys like Westbrook and Shady, Andy Reid has always somehow managed to have a guy like that in his offense. If there's one thing I'm SURE he knows, it's that position.

In total fairness, if Dee Ford wan be expected to stay healthy and eventually learn to play the run - or Gaines can develop some talking skills - why can't Lee/Moncrief develop better hands?

Yep.

There would have to be a colossal collapse for that to happen. Hell, without the Belcher incident, Pioli might not have been fired.

Staying healthy is something he'll either do right away or he won't. Durability isn't "developed".

I realize that you're thinking down the road but most people here aren't. They're bitching about our current crop of WRs because we didn't get an immediate upgrade.

Sure, hands can be developed but they won't be overnight. Neither Lee nor Moncrief makes this offense better RIGHT NOW, which is precisely what everybody is wanting.

Please. Reid has always found somebody. Whoever comes after JC probably won't be as dynamic, but I'm sure he will be fine. Early in Reid's Philly career, he had guys like Duce Staley and Correll Buckhalter.

It's silly to worry about stuff 2 or 3 years down the road. So much can change so fast in the NFL.

Ford can definitively rush the passer. This skill alone makes him valuable, and we're not worried about developing this skill set. Foundational skills like learning to catch the ball are not going to be acquired at the highest level; you either have it or you don't.

Health can be a bit of a by-product of luck (at times, anyway). So I see these issues as quite a bit different.

Agree.

So bottom line, we all sit around hoping JC never gets hurt and AR is able to replace one of the most talented backs in the game.

That game took a HERCULEAN effort by Alex and Bowe against a weak defense to be in that position (only to be let down by Sutton's chickenshit no-blitz defensive gameplan). That's not something you can rely upon to happen every game. Wide Receiver is the weakest position on the team and they've done virtually nothing to address it.

He not only replaced Westbrook, he UPGRADED the position.

I realize getting better than Charles is wholly unrealistic but again, if there's one thing I trust Reid with, it's the RB position.

Didn't we play with Baldwin at the beginning of last year? The man did nothing. I think they see something in Jenkins; maybe he just needs more time in Reid's system? Plus Bowe cannot be worse than last year. I think they really went BPA so you gets what you get. I kinda like this year' draft. Go ahead, call me silly.
