Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

Except for not pushing the mic and telling anyone out there listening they were in a mayday event. I can't believe they wouldn't do that before pulling the electrical bus for communications.

This has been debunked, I read. There were other pings later showing the plane having changed course.

Well, the bolded part is obviously not true.

Floating debris in the ocean is pretty hard to find, we pretty much knew roughly where the air france flight went down and it still took 5 days to find debris. We haven't really been seriously searching the area west of Australia until recently.

Also, keep in mind the search area, though much smaller today than yesterday, is still the size of freakin' Arizona.

The problem with that theory is that it is almost impossible for a fire to not bring down a jet for 7 hours.

I read it yesterday. I have a serious problem with one pilot's version that yanking electrical buses without first indicating a problem over the radio takes precedent.

It's happened on other flights. Makes more sense than suicide or terrorism.

If it was mostly smoke and the crew was dead it wouldn't be that hard. Maybe they contained the fire shortly before being overcome by smoke.

That only works if the crew didn't put on their oxygen masks. I suppose that's a possibility but I highly doubt it.

Yes, pilots have access to oxygen masks, but this is a no-no with fire. Most have access to a smoke hood with a filter, but this will last only a few minutes depending on the smoke level. (I used to carry one in my flight bag, and I still carry one in my briefcase when I fly.)
