Jared Allen unclear about future with Vikings
Jared Allen: Future with Minnesota Vikings unclear
83 By Marc Sessler Around the League Writer Published: May 24, 2013 at 08:42 a.m. Updated: May 24, 2013 at 02:17 p.m. Yesterday, we brought you a piece on Jared Allen, the All-Pro pass rusher who said he hasn't heard "one iota" from the Minnesota Vikings about a new contract. The six-year, $73.3 million contract Allen inked with the Vikings in 2008 is set to expire after this season. He'd like to play for the Vikings into the future, but he admits he has "absolutely no idea" where he'll wind up. "I pray about it," Allen told Dan Wiederer of The Star Tribune on Friday. "I talk to my wife. And we'll end up going where the good Lord takes us. But I don't know where that path is headed." Prodded for a best-case scenario, the 31-year-old Allen talked about the past: "Best-case scenario would have been that we would have never gotten to this point. Best-case scenario would have been the organization would have gotten something done (on an extension) a few years back. "Well, you know what? That's not the case. And I understand it. ... I'm just happy I'm in a spot where both sides are honoring the contract." The Vikings haven't bristled at honoring Allen's current contract because he's been one of the NFL's most productive pass rushers. He counts a whopping $17 million against the salary cap in 2013 -- and says he won't take a penny less -- but Allen is not going to earn another head-spinning deal at his age. His Vikings' future is very much in question. Follow Marc Sessler on Twitter @MarcSesslerNFL. |
