VARSITY
138 years ago, we got a screaming deal.

We took possession of Alaska on this day in 1867.

That got me thinking. We took a big chunk of land - a really big chunk, with oil and trees and seals and eskimoes and a bunch of other stuff - and we did it with no wars, no fighting, nothing. We just signed the papers and took possession, just like buying a car.

Would we consider doing that again? Cuba's got to have a low P/E ratio right now, and a lot of those African countries must be in the national 99 cent bin. Should the U.S. consider picking up a few of them? I would think that a lot of countries' populations would give their emaciated right arms for U.S. citizenship, and you know that Mississippi would like moving up from the bottom of the state rankings.

Poll forthcoming.

Hmmm...only problem is that we nowadays have a current account deficit of almost $700 billion, with virtually no foreign reserves. Sorry folks, we couldn't afford to buy a country even if we wanted to.

We're doing a piss poor job of it because we keep putting money into them and never getting any back out.
