First things first: that nickname.

Bill Parcells confirmed the origins at his press conference Thursday.

More than 20 years ago, when he was the linebackers coach in Boston, some of his players tried to pull a fast one over on Parcells one Thanksgiving.

Free turkey and all the trimmings at some location was the “fast one,” and Parcells supposedly responded: “Who do you think I am … Charlie the Tuna?”

That was a reference to a television commercial at the time for Starkist tuna where an animated tuna kept falling for clever ruses concealing a hook that always snagged him.

So, naturally the players — handed a nickname on a fish-shaped platter — started calling him Charlie Tuna and wearing tuna pictures on their helmets.

Over the years, the title became “The Big Tuna.” Not sure of the evolution, but it probably is a combination of girth increase and a more poetic rendering.

And in recent years, the nickname has been shortened to just “Tuna.”

Not too exciting is it? I had imagined Parcells acquired the moniker in some perilous fishing accident or during an unmentionable incident in the seedy underbelly of New York.

No matter what he is called now, Parcells just better remember who The Big Kahuna is.
