Securing your fortress at night: a question for you.

Whenever I go to bed, or whenever I leave the house, my fortress must be secure. This means that I close and lock all of the first-floor windows. I'm not that worried about the upper floors because I figure if Spiderman wants to rob me, Spiderman will rob me.

My wife tends to prefer leaving some windows open on warm days. These are relatively protected windows behind a privacy fence, but it still bothers me. So I always sneak around and close them if we're leaving, and I think she politely lets me do it.

What do others do? Are you okay leaving first-floor windows open when you're gone or asleep?

We can also count an unlocked door as being the same thing as an open window, perhaps.

I live (single family home) more than 100 yards away from my nearest neighbors on one side and more than half a mile on all others. I lock everything on the ground floor constantly and anything on the second floor that is unoccupied. It's all Fortress America up in here. Don't try to sneak into my home as a funny little joke or I'll kill you, by the way.

the neighbor to our right, before the new building codes thirty years ago, built their house literally two feet from our house. every where you drive here in the mountains 80% of houses are almost on top of each other. theres no elbow room like in rural kansas.

A moat would be nice but would be worthless without gator's. I'm almost sure gator's wouldn't do very well up here in Montana the winter. Military grade razor wire on the inner side of a fence is always a nice touch though.

Everyone keeps talking about guns, but we're protecting a relatively small enclosed space. I think a more effective weapon would be a spear in one hand and a short thrusting sword in the other. You guys should re-think this.

I can silver solder a spork onto the end of a Mossberg 500 barrel, if you'd like?

I live in a small town and good neighborhood. Lock the first level all the time, but leave the upstairs windows cracked to let the summer heat flow out. A cheap .45 by the bed and a good .45 in a more discreet hiding place near the bed.

Before putting the for sale sign up a couple weeks ago I could count on one hand the number of times I'd locked the door let alone windows. In fact, had to scrounge around to find a second key after taking the one I apparently had on my keychain to put in realtors lock box.

Maybe people aren't talking about their bayonets, then.

We live in a safe neighborhood but I batten down the hatches like I live in Mexico.......errrrrr.

Our front and back doors also have metal security screen doors on them. Solid as a rock. So if you want to come in through the door, you'll have to get through 2 of them. All windows and doors have security sensors with a motion detector in the living room. We alarm the house when we sleep and when we leave the house. All windows in the front of the house have sun screens on them and are a black out type of material so you can't see in during the day (too lessen the summer heat but this is a good secondary benefit).

Our bedroom looks out over the pool. Once the weather cools, we sleep with the windows open at night, but alarms still activated.

I figured you would give them the Mosin Nagant treatment. We need to break those out for our next ATV ride just because we can.
