"Arum said that negotiations with Lee in Arum's spacious suite at the Mayfair Hotel in New York City eventually led to a deal for the I.B.F. to grant a special exemption to approve the Foreman-Schulz bout with $100,000 going to the I.B.F. before the fight, and $100,000 afterward, Arum said.

The first installment was paid, Arum said, and Foreman defeated Schulz on April 22, 1995, in a controversial split decision.

When Arum resumes testifying Tuesday, he is expected to describe how he refused to pay the second installment after learning that another I.B.F. official received $250,000 from Foreman. A sworn statement filed by Arum does not identify that person.

The $100,000 payoff, and a similar sum the prosecutors say another promoter, Cedric Kushner, paid for the I.B.F. to mandate a Foreman-Schulz rematch, are the largest in the indictment against Lee and other I.B.F. officials that charges they took $338,000 to rig I.B.F. rankings and grant favors.

Foreman, of Houston, vetoed the rematch and relinquished the I.B.F. belt. He testified before the grand jury that indicted Lee. He has not been charged, and prosecutors have not disclosed whether he will take the witness stand in Lee's trial."

When he won that match against Axel Schulz, I stopped watching boxing. The sport has had a rotten reputation for being fixed for 100 years. Watching that match confirmed it for me.

That Foreman vs. Schulz match was a hoax, though. The judging of boxing bouts seemed to really go downhill from there....real crooked.
