I don't recall Trent Green needing anybody to rush to his aide after his loss to the Colts. Nobody even considered it. And it's not like we all weren't frustrated with Green's mistakes and bullshit in 2001 and 2002. He was attacked when he came to KC just like Alex was attacked when he came to KC.

Could it be that Trent Green ACTUALLY played a legitimate did-everything-he-possibly-****ing-could game? Or is it just that "agenda" that Messier was told about by the space aliens who probed him last night?

It will be the polar opposite of what's happening now.

It's all about expectations. If we had a top-tier QB, he'd be getting plenty of blame for not closing out the Colts. Evidence: Every top-tier QB who loses a game regardless of his performance gets the blame around here.

But because (most) don't expect much from Smith, when he meets or exceeds those low expectations, he's untouchable.

Hell, look at the first 9 games of the season. He was absolutely carried by a historic defense giving up 11 PPG, but if you questioned his 180 yard games, you were a hater.

The offense played an outstanding game.

Green really played a pretty average game.

The difference is that the Chiefs never got a big lead in that game, so Green wasn't hamstrung by shitty playcalling.

This not exonerate Smith from any blame, but I do think that you and others are trying to assign more blame to Smith than he deserves.

In fairness, the game was different. 10 years ago, you could win with just a running game. It's a passing league now.

His stats aren't nearly as good - they're not going to be when your RB runs for 180 - but the offense never stalled out.

That game was a "shootout" for 2003 standards, and IIRC, Manning only threw for like 305 yards.

I can't agree with that. If Tom Brady was up 38-10, played the same exact way as Alex Smith, his defense allowed 5 straight scores in less than 2 minutes per drive...and they lost...not a single Patriots fan would put one iota of the blame on Brady. Not one.

Yes, but in fairness, if you can't run the ball to burn clock, then it's on the coaching staff to put his QB, regardless if it's Alex Smith or Tom Brady, or Josh McCown, an opportunity to make plays and extend drives, and Alex Smith was really hamstrung by some seriously shitty playcalling in the second half.

There is no "more blame" or "less blame".

Like I said before, you could point to 40 different players and say, "had he played better in the last 26 minutes, we likely would have won."

Smith is one of those 40. I'm not even arguing that he's near the top of the list, even though he plays the most important position on the field.

Just that he's one of them.
