An ode to Gunther

Most coordinators get ousted once a new head coach arrives, yet Gunther Cunningham has been with the Chiefs through three different head coaches. I find this pretty amazing. Any thoughts?

Some say you're a genius. Some say you're a putz.
You tell us you need just one player or two
And all will be well if Carl listens to you.

But those players come and they stink up the place
While you're sitting upstairs with chaw in your face.
And you spit and curse and then you spit some more
All in the name of a good team rapport.

Then next year you tell us it's all about scheme
And things will be better with our fav'rite team.
But that plan implodes as opponents score thirty
And our players whiff and don't even get dirty.

And when we fans say that it's all gone to hell
You tell us to screw off, we've got Kendrell Bell.
And if you don't like it, come in for a meeting
So you and your 'backers can give us a beating.

Then finally you have a big sit down with Herm
Who tells you, "It's okay." you just must be firm.
So you yell and blaspheme and kick fat cabooses
'Cause you're out of players and plays and excuses.

You've got it! You claim! It's not runs it's the passes!
(And the fact you can't find anymore big orange glasses.)
So you draft fat linemen who can't even run
And announce they're the answer. It's what you do, Gun.

Gunther needs Baltimore-like talent to field a top ten defense, which basically says he's a product of his players, not the other way around.

He's nothing special and probably below average. Which is why he could only get a job as a LB coach once he was fired from KC.
I disagree. First of all, do you remember Dave Adolph? The putz that Gunther replaced. That man did not know how to coach a defense. I remember how ecstatic I was when San Diego hired him away from us. I never did understand why. As far as him needing top talent to succeed, I think that can be applied to most any coach. I don't think anyone could have done anything with the turds that Gunther had when he came back.

Coming from someone with your knowledge and skills that's high praise, indeed, Mr. gblowfish. Gracias peepolo.

The fact is that I like Gunther, too. I don't know why this particular Muse was so critical. Ever since Gun came back, I've hoped he could put together another dominating D - not only for our sakes, but for his as well. I like his attitude and believe that, if our players could only find a way to play like he curses, we'd be in good shape.

Given the way that Gunther's tenure as head coach ended, I think it's nothing short of remarkable that he was able to swallow his pride and return to KC, a place he obviously must have loved, a lot.

I don't think I'm a big enough person to have done this. Thus because of Gunther's emotional maturity (in this situation, anyway), there will always be a part of me that roots for his success, whether that's with the Chiefs or somewhere else. Preferably here.

So Dave Adolph sucked.

How does that detract from the fact that Gunther has sucked as for a decade and couldn't get a job a D-coordinator anywhere else in the league?

I've said this before and I'll say it again: The majority of Chiefs fans are far too myopic.

Similar to Gruden taking over the Bucs and Lovie Smith taking over the Bears, the pieces were in place already for them to succeed. That's my take on Goonther in the 90's.

This time around he's had to start from scratch and it shows. Only my three cents.

All Gunther needs are a few pro bowlers on his side of the ball and we'll be okay.

We've been awfully shallow in defensive talent for a while. Our best players need teeth.

There's no question that you need talent to succeed.
But almost every good coach gets one or two players to overachieve.

****her rarely gets players to simply achieve.
He has never had any player overachieve.
