Baseball : Who is the best player you ever saw play baseball?

So who is it in your mid that you have seen play ball ?

Myself, hands down, Willie Mays.

After that, a young Mickey Mantle.

Sure he did, in 1986.

He had become pretty strong at that point in his career. Remember that bomb he hit in Game 3 of the 1985 World Series?

By "seen" we mean people we have seen in live games? Because I think many people here are just talking about players in general, not games seen in person.

Todd Helton in the early 2000's was a beast. There were a couple years there were he was as good as anyone.

Haha. Who cares? That year he hit .370, I'm pretty sure some of that wasn't due to home games.

Not the greatest obviously but Darryl Strawberry had the best looking swing of all time. If not for all the off field the field bullshit, he would of been up there with all of the greats. I'm a Royals fan but I'm a huge fan of that 86 Mets team.

Oh f!

I read that as "Siver Bat" given for the batting title.

And yes that titanic HR into the bowels of that's shit circular stadium is something I'll never forget.

Very nice, descent and humble guy. At first he was reluctant to talk, but when he realized I worked there and didn't want an autograph- he was very cordial. We talked nearly an hour-my whole lunch break while he played a slot machine. Just a regular guy, very funny. We didn't talk much baseball-only that he thought salaries were out of control and the Mariners were having a hard time putting a contract together. He was hurt and they wanted to lowball him to keep A Rod. He was disapointed that they were not more loyal to him. It was very cool hearing about his family and life on the road. He asked a lot a questions about my family as well. When I left I really felt like I made a new friend. He shook my hand and told me thanks for listening- he had been a little down lately missing his kids and wife. Class Act and great ballplayer!!
Lot of stories out there like that.

Not a whiff or accusation of steroid use. His body type stayed the same. He was hurt towards the end and it was still the steroid era but he obviously didn't take them. If anyone that was a home run basher in that era.... it was Griffey Jr.

I collected a lot of Griffey Jr. baseball cards and memorabilia in the mid 90's. Gave it away to someone on the planet who would appreciate the stuff.
