Anybody have a wife (w/ kids) who works out?

My wife really wants to get back into shape after three kids (youngest is 14 months), but she's so busy it's hard to justify the expense of a gym membership. My wife works from home, two kids are in school/pre-school, and I work until 6 or 7 every night. How does your wife (or you ladies) find the time to consistently get in a workout 3/4 time a week?

Gym lets members get buff in the buff
POSTED: 9:17 a.m. EST, February 6, 2007

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (Reuters) -- For those who want to be really buff, a Dutch gym is introducing training sessions for nudists.

The Sunday morning sessions were added by popular demand and "anyone who shows up just to ogle will be thrown out," said gym manager Patrick de Man in the town of Heteren.

"This is a special session for naturists, and we will be very strict in enforcing this," he said.

The "nudifit" sessions, which will begin on March 4, have attracted a strong response -- both negative and positive, he said.

Staff, who will remain clothed during the sessions, will pay special attention to hygiene, ensuring clients cover machinery and bikes with towels or disposable covers, he added.

About two years ago, my wife made a strong commitment to get back into shape.

She leaves the house, EVERY morning, at 4:45 am, and shows up to the gym at 5:00am to work out for an hour and a half. She's home by 6:40, out of the shower and dressed by 7:10am. She's a machine.

She has breakfast going and the kids on the bus by 8:10am. She does this everyday, then heads to work (school teacher). She also goes to the gym around 9am on Saturday's. It doesn't interfere with my schedule at all. I work out at different times - sometimes in the morning, sometimes during lunch, sometimes after work - just depends on my schedule and what's going on with my kids.

My wife is 40 yrs old, and you can bounce a quarter off her ass and abs - that's after 3 kids. I'm loving it.

Kev, if your wife really wants to get back into shape, she'll figure out something that works, and make it a routine. Good luck to her.

My wife works out on a heavy bag every once in a while - bare knuckles too.

Boy, does my stomach hurt.

She can do that while the kid fiddles around. She's working hard and its paying off for her.

I lost 10 of my 15 pounds during deer seasons.....For whatever reason, I've not been able to make myself use that damn thing regularly. I do like it, in that it doesn't hurt my knees and it is definitely a workout.

Like anything else.....Its not the machine, its the person that makes up their mind to exercise that is the difference I think. Money well spent for us.

Another month, I'm dedicating myself to covering some miles looking for sheds....and we'll get the bikes back out, and pull Kidowanian around town in the Rickshaw.

I had forgotten all about this thread. Things haven't changed much since last year. She hasn't committed herself, despite being fully aware of the stress, lack of energy and lack of self-esteem that comes with the current state. She was a machine up until the kids, always in control and in great shape. House always cleaned, finances in tip top shape, etc. Now, between kids and work(20 hrs/week at home), it saps her all of her energy. There's always a kid that wakes up during the night, and she generally is the one to coax them back to sleep. Thus, she rarely gets a full night's sleep. I try very hard to help around the house and with the kids, despite routinely working 60 hour weeks. I don't pressure her at all about it, but it's clearly a drain on her mental state and our marriage. I'm able to work out at lunch some days, but we have a treadmill and weights in the basement for convenience. I don't really know what more I can do to change things, so I'm really just coasting at this point.

My wife has just recently dedicated herself to getting back in shape. My kid is 8 so it took her a while to get motivated again. It's been worth it though. She has a small frame so weight loss shows up quickly. Any chance you can motivate her by working out together?

A great idea that's been discussed, but we simply don't have the time. That's probably rationalization to a point....you find the time if it's important enough, right? We have priorities, and right now, the kids always come first. Then work, then ourselves. Thus, "ourselves" gets very little attention. One kid is in dance 3 times a week, another is in speech therapy 3 times a week, the other is 2 years old and not very independent yet. My wife put 28,000 miles on our van in the last year just driving around town, which amazed me when we looked it up.

I know exactly what you mean. 3 kids takes up a lot of your time.

I am spending my time trying to find something that will give me max results in a short time that I can do at home.

Tried Total Gym but takes too much time. Not as good as free weights anyway.
Tried Treadmill but I get shin splints when walking on it for some reason. Don't have problems with treadmills at the gym though.
My stationary bike is just damn boring.

Thinking of trying that Gazelle thing as I am hearing good things about it. Just wish I could find a good used one for around $100.
