Ellen Page is gay

Well, that's interesting.

http://gawker.com/ellen-page-comes-o...ium=socialflow

Actress Ellen Page publicly came out as gay Friday evening, while giving a speech at Time to THRIVE, a national LGBTQ youth conference held in Las Vegas.

"I'm here today because I am gay," Page told the assembled crowd, which responded with a standing ovation and a long chorus of cheers.

"Whoo!" said Page, before continuing:

Quote:

"And because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.

I also do it selfishly because I'm tired of hiding and I'm tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered, and my relationships suffered. And I'm standing here today with all of you on the other side of that pain."
Page is most famous for becoming pregnant by her awkward classmate Michael Cera, and for invading the dreams of a stranger alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, neither of which happened in real life, because she is an actress.

After her speech, the Human Rights Campaign, which organized the conference, congratulated Page on the front page of its website for "her brave decision to live openly and authentically."

I really don't like the term normal in any sociological or psychological discussion.

What is normal?

Apparently "normal" is defined by what the majority of the populace considers it to be in whichever situation. At least that seems to be the vibe Donger is throwing out.

Normal is what the vast majority of people are. And I realize that many people don't "like" it.

No, it isn't silly. Bisexuals are abnormal, too.
Bisexuals are abnormal? Not according to your description of normal. They have the proper sexual organs to mate the with opposite sex, and the desire. They just have additional desires to go along with their normal desires. So for a bisexual, your definition of normal and your definition of abnormal could both apply simultaneously. Which is why your label cannot be accurate.

What makes you think that is my description of normal?

Edit - I see how you could get that from my post above. That isn't what I was doing there, but I can see how you could view it that way.

See 530 for my definition of normal.

Because you stated this:

Which is also what you've alluded to in other threads about homosexuality. If that is incorrect, please feel free to correct it.

Sorry, I edited. See above.

I have given that example before to explain why homosexuals have "bad wiring." Regarding bisexuals, I suppose that "occasionally confused wiring" would be more accurate.

But both asre abnormal with regard to societal norms in the United States.

Then how do you feel about the quest to change societal norms?

Depends on the specifics, I suppose. Homosexuality will never be a societal norm, however.

Normal is a cultural construction, which is the entire problem with trying to enforce it. You are asserting inorganic absolutes on dynamic individuals. No one is normal, but most people posture as such in order to appear so to the rest of society. Part of what upsets many people in this thread, such as those who don't like certain open decrees of one's gayness, is that such decrees flout the framework of normativity, shining light on the nudity of the emperor.

Is a person with one leg normal or abnormal, relative to the general population?
