K-State's Ryan Mueller helps Kansas boy with Leukemia
I wanted to pass along a touching story about some friends of my family, and how one K-State football player has made a big difference in their battle against childhood Leukemia.

Meet little tough guy Kaiden Schroeder:

A McPherson boy is getting the gift of life.

7-year-old Kaiden Schroeder has been fighting leukemia for most of his life.

Now he's about to get help from his 4-year-old sister, Ashlyn.

For the first time in a long time, the Schroeder family stepped outside to enjoy the fresh air.

Sunday is the family's last night together in McPherson. They are packing up to head to Kansas City where Kaiden will have a bone marrow transplant. His sister Ashlyn is his donor.

Kaiden is too young to fully know what his sister is doing for him but simply says he is thankful.

"It makes me feel happy," he says smiling.

Kaiden has battled leukemia for almost four years with chemotherapy and various treatments.

"It's been hard seeing my son go through this and having to deal with chemo, the total body radiation he's gonna have to go through and just knowing that I can't really do anything for him except pray," says Chris Schroeder, Kaiden's father.

Kaiden has relapsed twice but the family hopes this time is the right time.
Kaiden is a die hard K-State fan. And while attending a football game in Manhattan, Kaiden happened to meet Ryan Mueller. Ryan Mueller is a sophomore DE for K-State. I knew nothing about Ryan until recently, other than seeing a couple glimpses of him in K-State games. But I've come to respect him quite a bit. Ryan noticed Kaiden sitting in a wheelchair at the K-State game with his shaved head and Wildcat gear, and happened to say hi. They've been very good friends ever since. Ryan has started visiting Kaiden in the hospital, bringing him K-State jerseys, promising K-State tickets when Kaiden has recovered enough to attend games, and just providing hope, encouragement, and smiles.

This week, Kaiden spent his 8th birthday in a KC hospital undergoing a bone marrow transplant. His little 4 year old sister courageously stepped up as a bone marrow donor, when no other donor match could be found. The pain that both these kids are going through this week is hard to imagine.

Ryan has taken time out of his schedule to visit Kaiden in KC multiple times. He's been communicating with him through Facetime on the iPad. And has even gotten Collin Klein, Authur Brown, and Coach Snyder on Facetime to talk to Kaiden. It's amazing the difference it's made in this boy's fight.



Anyway, I just thought it was really touching to see a busy athlete reach out to a random small town kid, and make such a difference.

Ryan Mueller, you're officially one of the good guys. Go Cats!

Kaiden could use some good juju this week, if you happen to have some to spare.

Blackmon did something like this with a girl with cancer IIRC.

FYI... Happy update.....

Former K-State wildcat and San Diego Charger Ryan Mueller came to eat lunch with Kaiden Schroeder and his 4th grade class. He topped off his visit by playing a little bit of octopus tag at recess.
