Even if that were possible, which it's not regardless of the level of technology, there's still no logical reason for it. There's no advantage to having two people neurally linked as one, while there would be countless disadvantages. If redundancy is a concern, then you have a backup pilot.

Or perhaps they are following along in the line of Godzilla having two brains (as seen in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)), one in his head & the other in the base of his spine?

Or perhaps it's just a cheap plot device?

redundancy is the logical reason for it. They never say if they act in unison or if one is a backup, my guess is that the main pilot has primary control, and other is a back up.
