Today my dog had a seizure. She started foaming at the mouth and was on her side straight as a board and shaking for a good 3 -5 minutes. What would cause it?

My aunt's lab had one when I was over there watching her kids one day. Took a dump on the floor when it was doing it. I called her and she said the vet said there's not much you can do.

One final thing: if you follow Saul's advice and don't give the dog any phenobarb, at the very least make sure that you have some Valium on hand. You can get it from the vet. A 3-5 minute seizure is a long episode. Any longer than that and the dog risks going into status epilepticus. If a seizure lasts more than a few minutes you can stop it by inserting a Valium into the dog's rectum.

Another thing you should do is keep a seizure log. Every time the dog has an episode write down when it happened, the characteristics of the seizure, and the approximate length. Should things change, show the log to the vet.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but. . . .

RIP Dusty - Andrew Sullivan's bestie of 15 1/2 years. Put to sleep last night.

Never met the guy, nor would I expect to, but his love of his dog has been a LONG-standing aspect of his personality. His site's avatar has long featured a cartoon of her, whether lolling at Andrew's feet as he typed, or howling in the letterhead. Whenever she or her little bro did something cute or memorable, it'd get a blurb on the blog.
