Chiefs' offense: "one of the worst in the league, by nearly every measure"

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2013/9...chiefs-offense

some numbers to chew on from arrowhead pride

Quote:
The Chiefs are actually 12th in the league in PPG, at 23.7. But if you take away the 14 points the defense is directly responsible for, that number drops to 19 PPG, which would be tied for 23rd - with the Raiders. The Chiefs are relying on the defense to score points, which isn't good. Defensive scoring is random and shouldn't be part of the game plan. They didn't need Tamba Hali's pick-6 to beat the Jaguars, but they did need Eric Berry's against the Eagles.

They also are just not moving the ball; their 333 yds/gm is 21st in the league and their 4.9 yds/play ranks 25th. "Well Kyle," you may ask, " if the Chiefs offense is so bad, how are they undefeated this year?" That's an excellent question, thank you for asking. The answer is that the defense and special teams are much, much better than we thought.
Quote:
The problem the Chiefs are having is getting to the Red Zone in the first place. They're 30th in yards per drive, with only Tampa Bay and Jacksonville behind them, and Cleveland directly in front of them (not good company to be in). This is a really, really bad offense. But here's the real kicker: the Chiefs' offense has the best starting field position in the NFL this year, and still can't score.
Quote:
The Chiefs average 17 yards per drive better field position than their opponents (ok, ok, 16.95), the best mark in the NFL (2nd table). Only two other teams average more than 10 yards better starting field position than their opponents (New England and Chicago). The Chiefs' average starting line of scrimmage (LOS) is their own 36.97 yard line (best in the NFL), while their opponents average starting LOS is their own 20.02 yard line (also best in the NFL). What all of that means is the Chiefs's offense is handed consistently great starting field position and can't do anything with it, then they let the special teams pin opponents deep in their own territory. The defense bails out the offense by not letting opponents move the ball, giving the offense the ball back with great starting field position. Lather, rinse, repeat.
There's a nice breakdown of our defense against philly over there as well:
http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/9/2...p-kelly-eagles

Quote:
I have to reiterate and emphasize just how much the Chiefs played man to man -- like a ton of it. And they have the secondary to handle it, unlike most teams in the NFL. Specifically, they matched up Sean Smith on Cooper a lot on the outside. If this had been a prize fight, Cooper's corner would have thrown in the towel somewhere around the middle of the second quarter. Smith owned him right up until the end of the game when he started cramping up. Cooper just couldn't shake him, especially on those aforementioned deep routes Kelly had him running all game.

The defense can surely make up for an inept offense, but there's no way they could make up for a turnover here and there.
There are very few, if any, complete teams in the NFL.

Green Bay has a great QB and a shit defense. The Giants have a great QB and a shit team (so far). The 49ers have been a joke all the way around.

The defense is ahead of the offense for one simple reason: Since 2005, the Chiefs have chosen a defensive player with their first pick of the draft seven times. They've chosen an offensive player three times, one of which is no longer with the team and the other is a non-skill position player.

Second round and later round defensive players have also made more of an impact than their offensive counterparts.

The worst part is that after years of drafting offensive lineman, tight ends and a few wide receivers, the Chiefs are lacking talent on the offensive line, tight end and WR position.

Exactly.

Especially with a guy who's supposed to be one of the most accurate passers under ten yards. Just throw him a decent ball and he's going to come away with it 9/10. He fights for balls and gets them. And once he does; he gets YAC.

It should be a match made in heaven, but I suppose Avery is our secret weapon this year?

No complaints there. I'm glad to have a somewhat viable #2; but Bowe isn't getting paid to be a ****ing decoy out there. Or at least I hope that isn't the plan. If he's drawing double teams I can see looking away. Is that really the case? Is Bowe double covered nearly every passing play? Don't think so.

Well then, put me on ignore and save someone a black eye.. or save yourself from going to prison. I won't hold it against you. I am not saying anything wrong. People here just can't seem to handle any type of criticism, and tend to exaggerate everything into epic proportions. Nothing I can do about that.

and now that Smith is here...McCluster sucks...notice how people gave up that argument...yeah
So you are seriously going to imply the biggest issue with the offense right now is Smith?

Charles did have issues in the Eagles game. Thats why Reid was reaming his ass.

I watched all offensive snaps of the Eagles game again last night. Smith had about 2 or 3 head scratchers out of 78 offensive plays.

Albert lined up improperly 2 times, Fisher was called for holding and was beat like a drum all the first half and the run blocking was horrendous. The OL had 6 total penalties.

We completed 3 3rd and more than 10 yard conversions and were 0-3 on 3rd and 1 running the ball.

You only see what you want to see. Keep talking about people making excuses when you cant even objectively look at whats actually happening in a game.

I thought Avery was a great signing over the summer. Now if they can just ditch the McCluster shit and get Hemingway on the field.

I think there's a lot more talent on this unit than people realize. This isn't the days of Chris Thomas and Snoop Minnis. They just have to find a way to get it all together. Getting Fasano and/or Kelce back will help. Assuming that ever actually happens.

There's nothing lazy about Bowe - he's busted his ass for this franchise since they drafted him.

That being said - he's not been very reliable this year. I don't think he has an official drop yet, but I've seen 4 balls that really should've been caught go off his hands so far this year, including the first 2 that went his way in the Eagles game.

Meanwhile, Avery's bringing in those passes in traffic; the 3rd down from the endzone being the most obvious example.

It's on Smith to some degree in that he has to work on trusting Dwayne Bowe - the guys bonafides are apparent to all. At some point he's going to have to just go with the resume.

But at the same time, Bowe's simply not done as much to earn Smith's trust to this point as Avery has and I think that's why you see Smith looking to Avery a little more.

I'm not worried - Smith's a smart cat and he'll figure out that he has a very large man he can throw to who will get it, run a guy over and rumble for another 15-20 yards. But the chemistry hasn't clicked yet because so far, those plays just aren't coming together.

The most ridiculous overreaction is to Smith.

If Smith had "forced" the ball to his receivers instead of making smart decisions, this team could easily be 1-2.

But because Smith didn't force the ball to his receivers or make stupid errors, penalties or interceptions, he's played "scared".

Yet, the Chiefs are 3-0.

Dumb.
