**Official USA vs Portugal World Cup Game Thread**

USA vs PORTUGAL | 5 PM KICK OFF | ESPN
Arena Amazonia | Manaus, Brazil

United States moves on to the knockout stage of the 2014 World Cup with a win. A tie or loss leaves a lot of other scenarios but lets just win this.

US faces a talented team that is having a bit of a crisis of confidence. They feature the best player (arguably) in the world in Cristiano Renaldo. If we can contain CR7 the rest of the team probably does not have what it takes to give us trouble.

Huge ****ing day for US Soccer.

The problem with us soccer in the past is that the US hasn't been winning. Really the way to target is to get kids growing up watching the sport, then wait for them to grow up and watch it with their kids. So it will take some time.

But winning cures a lot of ills. When you win, you find marketable superstars. Women's soccer is a great example. Mia Hamm and Alex Morgan were bonafide celebrities. Donovan would have been too if the us kept winning.

Thats just not true. It's a false assumption based on TV ratings, especially World Series ratings.

MLB is setting attendance records almost yearly. MLB has a record TV contract. Salaries are the highest for the players, GM's and workers evah. Merchandise sales are up.

MLB.TV at $200 yearly is hitting 4-5 million subscribers this year.

You should read the Joe Poz blog on this issue he wrote yesterday. He broke down this false assumption down with stats and social trends.

No, Americans love USA soccer more than in previous years. No doubt interest in soccer in the US has grown, mostly due to the success of the MLS.

But he's right in the fact that as soon as we are knocked out of the tournament, viewership will plummet.

Or maybe I'm wrong. Do you have numbers on ratings of games not involving the US compared to previous years?

Having a smaller time zone difference opposed to 2010 in South Africa plays a part in increased viewership as well, I suspect.

Seems I've touched a nerve, but US TV ratings for the World Cup will crash once the US is out of the competition. There's a massive nationalism element at play here.

Yeah, I'm aware of this. MLB is and will be more than fine financially (it's still the #1 summer professional sport). Doesn't mean that baseball is as popular as it was a generation ago. Football (the American version) has surpassed it significantly..

It's not so much that baseball is less popular, it's that its popularity has become concentrated in certain areas. It's still immensely popular (and even growing) in those areas, but interest outside of those areas has been fading, and it's never coming back.

You're missing my point. The US was in the group stage last tournament and the tournament before that and got. Ratings are up 50% from the last tournament yet you give no credit to soccer. Do people love USA that much more?

I do think soccer is growing in this country. But I also think the hype of the group has helped ratings. Hard to get pumped up for Slovenia and Algeria the last go around.
