HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

Well, it's a legit criticism. It was boring as hell.

It may have been interesting to readers of the books but to people being introduced to this for the first time, it was a great big yawn.

Episode 1: Well, this is interesting, hope the pace picks up
Episode 2: This is awesome!

I don't think you're exactly the target audience.

You'll like it once the tournament starts. Sorry about all that boring talking and stuff in the meantime.

Episode 3 was my favorite one yet. I just finished it.

That whole scene where the old guy was telling Tyrion that "Winter is coming" and that they didn't have the manpower to fill the other castles along the wall was bone-chilling.

Jon Snow is my favorite and there was plenty of him in this episode, and the stuff with Arya and Syrio was cool.

Oh and ****ing Littlefinger. I love the casting for him.

Yeah, wtf is up with that?

I haven't read the first book past this point (this episode) so I don't know, but they must be saving Ghost for something later in the season.

It's Carcetti from The Wire. Outside of Sean Bean, my favorite casting decision.

As someone who is fully capable of sitting through the extended versions of the lord of the rings, **** you.

This shit is boring.

I don't need constant action to be entertained. But this episode was LITERALLY people sitting in rooms and blathering on with little emotion, broken up by one lame swordfight/mugging.

YAWN.

I only remember seeing Ghost twice, when Jon found him and then outside the camp as they were heading for the wall.

There wasn't much emphasis at all on the wolves last week for whatever reason.

As was mentioned, wife and I have not read the books but ep. 3 was not boring at all. Backstories were fleshed out, characters were further developed, foreshadowing of winter was further enhanced. All elements necessary to convey a complex set of concurrent plot lines in brief one hour bursts instead of four complete books. I assume without this type of episode early on much that happens later would be meaningless or would slip by altogether.

You're a child. Whether you can sit through LotR or not, you're a child, even in your 30s. You just don't have the maturity that a series like this requires.

You're an idiot, keg. The last movie I saw in the theater was The King's Speech and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Last episode was a bunch of people in fancy costumes making small talk.

I also liked how Jaime has been the most hate-able (not sure if thats a word) character so far, but we got one little sympathetic moment with him when Robert asked him what the Mad King was saying when he stabbed him in the back. I thought that little part was awesome.

Also, if you can't appreciate dialogue, then you shouldn't ****ing watch TV.

Yes, indeed, you're quite the mature, well-adjusted adult. You demonstrate that each and every day.

Actually, I'm mostly just ****ing with you. I'd say I'm a child myself. I mean, I am posting on a bulletin board at 2 in the afternoon instead of going to work like I should. And tonight I'll watch TV and play video games.

So...don't take it personally.

You seem to be one of the few saying the episode was boring. While the episode wasn't beginning to end action, it was necessary and interesting. Off the top of my head, the following happened:

1) Intro of Littlefinger
2) Intro of the other members of the small council (Renly Baratheon, Varys, Grand Maester Pycelle)
3) We find out Daenerys is pregnant
4) Viserys makes an ass out of himself and gets punked the **** out by one of the bloodriders
5) Arya starts her dancing lessons with Syrio
6) Conversations between Tyrion and Jon Snow, which were very interesting and enlightening
7) Intro of many characters of the Night's Watch (Commander Mormont, Ser Aliser Thorne, Grenn, Pyp, Maester Aemon, Yoren, etc.).
8) Development of Jon's character after Tyrion talks to him about the backgrounds of the boys Jon schooled in training.

Without going into spoiler territory, all those items above are important in their own ways. Nothing about the episode says boring to me. If you were bored by it, it's probably best you just stopped watching. The books are filled with descriptions and setups similar to what you saw in the last episode.

I think the sympathy for Jamie comes later. Much later. Getting away from Cersei is...beneficial.
