Huge, Huge News

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

unless he fasts foward several years its just going to be impossible, from a production point of view, to go a full seven seasons. just the actors themselves will have changed from young or teenagers into full blown adults. i agree books 2 and 3 are full of awesomeness so youre probably right it might get spread out over two seasons then. maybe 4 and 5 will be combined since not a whole lot goes down. i guess we'll see what 6 and 7 holds but im guessing the suits at HBO arent willing to drop the massive amounts of dough to complete the saga all the while waiting for this dude to get off his lazy ass and complete the series

They began tinkering with the ages of young characters before the series even began (Robb/Jon/Sansa all older) so I don't think adjusting to the actors playing Arya and Bran getting older is going to be any major kind of hurdle. Who knows though.

Main thing will be maintaining the ratings. That'll be what ultimately determines how long it runs.

ROME was a terrific show with a wide viewing base that was slated for 5 seasons. they realized about halfway through season 2 that it just was too expensive. hopefully they dont think that way with this

And that's broadcast. They'll have to go into production in the year prior. Meaning 2015 for season 6 and 2016 for season 7. That's three and four years from now, respectively.

Does anybody really think Martin's going to have the entire series finished in four year?
I never underestimate the ability of a studio to shorten and bastardize a story in order to fit production timelines, budget, and aging actors.
