Books that ****ed you up

there is really only one book that left me disturbed for quite some time after reading it, and it is Aztec by Gary Jennings.
Has anyone here read it as well?
Did you feel the same way, and are there other books that leave you with a similar feeling?

Quote:
Aztec is the extraordinary story of the last and greatest native civilization of North America. Told in the words of one of the most robust and memorable characters in modern fiction, Mixtli-Dark Cloud, Aztec reveals the very depths of Aztec civilization from the peak and feather-banner splendor of the Aztec Capital of Tenochtitlan to the arrival of Hernán Cortás and his conquistadores, and their destruction of the Aztec empire. The story of Mixtli is the story of the Aztecs themselves---a compelling, epic tale of heroic dignity and a colossal civilization's rise and fall.

The Rules was gay? Did you not know one of the main characters was bi?
i think it was The Informers that i tried and put down. Rules of attraction kept going into a lot of gay situations iirc and i didn't feel like sitting there visualizing it. and i do look forward to reading American Psycho, i can get into that type of subject matter much better.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy. While the overall story is about the strength of a father and son's relationship, the world they live in is dark, dismal, and depressing. It was very hard to read at times. Both creepy and heartbreaking.

One of my all time favorites. And that one absolutely did a number on me. I had to stop reading it for a little while to get my head straight.

The only other book I've ever HAD to put down was American Psycho. That book is so ****ed up.

Other books that messed me up: Blindess by Jose Saramago, The Road by Cormac McCarthy and Senseless by Stona Fitch.

American Psycho has some of the most disturbing imagery I've ever encountered. It's horrific. It's vile at times.

What makes it worse is that he'll juxtapose an unbelievably violent, misogynistic, torturous scene with one of the funniest things you'll ever read. It's laugh out loud humor somehow makes the violence worse.

It's a messed up book. I'm glad I read it, but I won't ever read it again. The film gets the point across and is more successful. The book is overkill (no pun intended).
