He's a 10. Who else would you rather have?

He is a cautionary tale for Mahomes staying healthy. He doesn't throw as strong or accurate as Mahomes shows potential to be, but he's a top 10-20 all-time when at the top of his game. And he was very fast and mobile when healthy, on par with Young and just a smidge behind Cunningham and Vick. He went to 4 straight NFC championships right alongside Reid. THey was a lot of hight level play that got them there. He just didn't have the stamina to be in top form at the end. Further, when he got gimpy or tired, he didn't elevate, he cocooned. He made worse decisions when facing strong adversity than otherwise. |

I remember what the chiefs were before Andy, so he gets a 7. Goes up if we do something in the playoffs.

I originally voted a 7 on this poll, but I change my mind and rank him an 8 because I'm feeling nice and he's done a good job of making the Chiefs one of the better teams in AFC after the dreadful Pioli era. It takes a lot to turn the entire face of the franchise around, and to do it quickly, so credit has to given there. Marty/King Carl were able to do it, and speaking of Marty, he probably deserves to be in that 8 range as well, for roughly the very same reasons.
Reid's been a HC for 20 straight yrs in the NFL, 1 year longer than Belichick even. You don't get to be a HC in the NFL for that long without being successful. In his 20 straight years of being a NFL HC: He's made the playoffs 14x if we're counting this season (if all goes to plan). He's only had a losing season 3x - 1999 1st season as HC in 1999, 5-11 - 2005 (McNabb bitten by Madden curse, placed on IR), 6-10 - 2012 His last season, ultimately led to his firing. 4-12 He's top 10 (#10) of most wins by a HC. Will pass Dan Reeves and Chuck Noll this year and if Chiefs make a SB run, he'll pass Marty for 7th all-time, if not then next season he def will. By the end of his coaching career he'll be in the top 5. BUT... 9's and 10's win SB's. The only thing really missing is a SB win for Reid. If he wins only 1..he'll jump up immediately to a 9, and if he wins multiple w/ Mahomes, he'll eventually become a 10. There are only a handful of coaches who I'd consider to be 10's (Belichick, Noll, Landry, and Shula).

He's a 10. Unless you think there's 1 coach every 10 hires that's better than Andy, you have to put him at a 10. Andy is one of the best ever.

Doug Pederson taught Andy how to take his (and Andy's) second string QB to win the SB as well as MVP.

Hes a hall of fame coach and you could argue the best this franchise has ever had.

Put it like that, sure, but I don't think most people view a scale of one to ten that way. More of a bell curve. Lots of 3-7s much fewer as you get to either end. I said 8 because I can't justify giving him a higher rating than that without a ring or two. |

What's the ultimate goal of a coach? Put out an entertaining product on the field or win the championship? It has been 48 years since we played in a S.B. That fact colors my reasoning.
I did a 6. He has been a failure in the playoffs. Had his team ahead by dozens of points in the first half only to lose. One could say the defense let him down. Correct, but in most cases just one additional score would have won the game and he controlled the offense. But, my opinion of Andy has gone WAY up this year. He is doing an excellent job of breaking in a young QB, who appears to be H of F potential. Regular season .. as Chiefnj2 said ... he's probably an 8 regular season and a 1 in the playoffs. Now, I do have HOPE that he will win multi-championships. But, you can't grade a guy on what you hope he does..... Best coach we have had. NO!!!! Remember, Hank was the coach of the whole team ... meaning he had to do the planning/preparation/coaching/etc. for offense, defense, special teams. And, he was the G.M. We started losing when "money" became the biggest issue for Lamar and he brought in a business man to run the team. (And, when "old knees" started playing of turf. But, if Andy wins multi-championships .......... |
