Chiefs sign Savage, five other UDFAs. Direckshun rejoices.
I LOVE this Savage kid as an UDFA acquisition. He has a great chance to make this team in some capacity.
http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2008/05...e_free_agents/ Chiefs Agree to Terms with Six Rookie Free Agents May 20, 2008, 2:51:20 PM Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Tuesday that the club has agreed to terms of two-year contracts with six rookie free agents. G L.J. Anderson, S Khayyam Burns, LB Weston Dacus, G Edwin Harrison, LB Lerue Rumph and RB Dantrell Savage all agreed to terms. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreements were made available. Anderson (6-3, 292) competed in 36 games (33 starts) in three seasons at Central Florida. Anderson made 11 starts at right guard as a senior and was a key blocker for RB Kevin Smith, who led the nation with 2,567 rushing yards and 30 TDs. He played all three linebacker positions during his tenure with the Razorbacks. Dacus prepped at Searcy High School in Searcy, Arkansas. Harrison (6-3, 314) saw action in 45 contests (29 starts) at right tackle for Colorado. He is the grandson of former Iowa G Calvin Jones, winner of the ‘55 Outland Trophy. Harrison earned SuperPrep All-Southwest honors as a senior at Wesbury High School in Houston, Texas. Rumph (6-2, 224) saw duty in 45 games (24 starts) at North Carolina State, logging 187 tackles (120 solo), 13.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks (-9.0 yards), one pass defensed, three fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. He was also a key member on special teams for the Wolfpack. Rumph was an all-region selection at Central Catholic High School in Tampa, Florida. Savage (5-8, 182) appeared in 22 contests over two seasons at Oklahoma State after transferring from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. He carried the ball 349 times for 2,092 yards (6.0 avg.) with 17 TDs and caught 35 passes for 307 yards (8.8 avg.) with two TDs for the Cowboys. His 11 offensive TDs led the team in 2007. Yeah, I've seen Savage play a few times. That's a nice pick-up there.

OSU Savage will help put butts in seats, if he makes 53.

Sounds like Savage is a good signing, but is there really a place on this team for him? LJ, Kolby Smith, Jamaal Charles.....

I like the Savage pick up.
Brief look at pros and cons: Strengths: Very good timed speed...Elusive and extremely quick...Hits the hole hard and has a burst...Great vision...Difficult to corral...Hard worker with great intangibles...Has shown some potential as a receiver out of the backfield..Possible return specialist. Weaknesses: Does not have great size or bulk...Not much of an inside runner...Lacks power and strength...Does not have a lot of experience...Sub par blocker...Wasn't used much as a receiver...Still has a lot to prove as a return man...Durability may be an issue

At this juncture I'd say he's all but guaranteed a spot on the practice squad. RB's a volatile position, and one of the aforementioned three have a good chance of getting hurt. |

The team should always be working to develop RBs. And QBs.

Savage is the kind of UDFA that can ordinarily make a 53-man roster, but with three spots already spoken for... I wonder if that can happen.
Would the Chiefs carry 4 Halfbacks? A better question might be would Savage clear waivers if we tried to sneak him on to the Practice Squad? I'm not sure that he would. |

Historically, the Chiefs carry six RBs - 3 HBs and 3 FBs. I guess we could go four RBs, provided both he and Charles can excel at special teams. |

The Chiefs have not carried 3 RBs and 3 FBs under Vermeil or Edwards. Herm may carry 4 RBs and 1 FB, but most likely 3 RBs and 2 FBs.
