Pats give the boot to Brandon Meriweather
Posted by Mike Florio on September 3, 2011, 3:12 PM EDT Two straight Pro Bowls and 64 appearances in 64 career games ultimately wasn’t enough to save safety Brandon Meriweather. The Patriots have parted ways with the first-round pick from the 2007 draft, according to a league source. Meriweather’s status had been the subject of rumor and speculation. He recently downplayed to our good buddy Tom Curran of CSNNE.com the fact that coach Bill Belichick had Meriweather playing during garbage time of the preseason finale. Meriweather, notorious during his time in college for a stomping incident during an on-field brouhaha, was implicated in an offseason shooting. He eventually was cleared by authorities. A four-year veteran, he becomes an unrestricted free agent. |

Normally when these cuts come in, there are a number of guys that intrigue, but to this point, this guy and Zane Taylor are the only players released that I have any interest in.

I would say that has a great deal to do with his release.

Or the fact that, despite the Pro Bowl appearance, he graded out as a below average safety.

FYP.
As a Patriot fan I'm scratching my head over this one (as are many others). They probably now have the worst safety depth in the league. Why would you let Sanders go if you had this in mind? And if you had this in mind, why would you not shop the first-round Pro-Bowler from Day One of training camp, when you could field offers and at least get something for him (instead of frantically trying to get something on the final cutdown day when everyone knew you would then just release him)? It's epically stupid, the entire series of events, really. |
