I shit you not -- Whitlock will be on CNN soon.

They just did a rundown of upcoming stories, and they featured "a sports columnist who, in the wake of Sean Taylor's death, comes out swinging against black-on-black crime. And here's here in the studio."

So he'll be on. God knows when, though.

He's as bad as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, using a tragedy to forward his own agenda and fuel his personal popularity contest. Does he really think he's raising awareness of black on black crimes, while he's on CNN? Or even writing for the KC Star? If the majority of black on black crimes occur within the poor population, then how is this message getting to the intended recipients?

Does he think the gunman of this tragic event is sitting at home, watching CNN?

I honestly think he's trying to make a difference. Is he an attention whore? Sure. Good for him. I don't know of anybody who has taken aim at the hip-hop culture like JW has. Who cares if it thrusts his career upwards?

I think that HE THINKS he's trying to make a difference, but if someone's heart is in the right place and they really want to make a difference then they will just go do it, start making differnces (even small ones in their own world, then build from that) and do it without worrying about what glory or fame they can get out of it.

IMO, Jwhit is more like the person that helps someone and then starts yelling "look at me, look at me, I'm trying to make a difference."

I also agree that this isn't about the Hip Hop community. It may not HELP the problems, but it certainly isn't the root cause of it, IMO again.

I just don't see it. He's making a genuine attempt to talk to his people. Unlike the guys you mentioned who clearly only care about themselves, Whitlock is trying to make a difference and I applaud him. The next great step will be when a white columnist is able to write the same articles.

Who cares who writes them? I certainly don't. I acknowledge that they'll be more aptly received by a black columnist but I honestly don't care.

Well I personally don't care who writes them either, but truth be told - you and I, kind sir, are in the minority of that opinion.

First part: that may be true, and I may be wrong (appologies if so, too) - I was only stating my opinion of it. However if he's being genuine and really trying to make a difference he needs to hire a think tank that can help him find a more effective way to reach out and really talk to "his people".

Second part: Amen brother, preaching to the choir.

Yeah, why would he try to get a story out on the LARGEST NEWS network in the world!!

He should go door to door to all the guys sitting at home on their couch. Is that what you are saying.

As for using a tragedy like this, most every change occurs after a tragedy, unfortunately thats what gets attention.

- I like the visual of him going door to door, that's a good one. No, that's not what I'm going for, he could do so many things in neighborhood of significant crime ratings and get awareness out to people that way, I just personally don't believe that of the next 10,000 black people that commit a violent crime against other black person will hold a percentage value anywhere near 10%.

I still firmly state that Hip Hop has nothing to do with it.
