Costco Return Policy

I've been looking into buying a new TV, and I recall a number of people on this forum discussing Costco's liberal return policy.

It appears that policy is no longer in place.

New Policy

Costco will now allow returns within 90 days from the date of purchase for the following items:

Television
Computers
Cameras
Camcorders
IPod/MP3 players
Cellular phones

I like Costco and considered buying my tv from them because of the extra protection. Now, I'll simply buy from an on-line merchant for less and purchase with my AMEX card as it also doubles the standard manufacturers warranty in the same manner as Costco's new policy.

I thought some other board members might want the heads-up on the change in policy.

You wouldn't need it, but people took advantage of it. I have a friend who got a HDTV from Costco, used it for a year, and then returned it and got a newer one. He could have continued upgrading every year if they didn't change their policy like they wisely have done.

People use return policies like ****ing criminals and then they are suprised when companies pull them.

I'm not surprised they pulled it; like noa, I've heard of someone returning a PS2 (for the original price) so that he could buy an XBOX 360. I don't know anyone (other than the idiot I read about on-line) who thinks that behavior is right.

Costco currently has a Panasonic 50PX600U selling for $2299.99 (plus tax and shipping). The same TV can be found through pricegrabber for $2059.00 (including tax and shipping).

Clearly a lot of people have viewed the extra $ at Costco to be like buying an extended warranty. I don't think people should feel bad about returing a tv if it broke after two and a half years if they intentionally paid more at Costco because Costco has sold people on their liberal return policy.

I'm actually thankful that they've changed their policy, though. It'll prevent gross abuse, should create lower prices, and it will end debate on how long is too long to bring back the television.

It also made my decision on where to buy my tv much easier.

I used to abuse Wal-Mart's return policy when I was a teenager. One time I found an old car stereo in our garage and returned it. I'm talking like two years old and covered with dust and stuff. They no longer carried the model so they gave me the $179.00 for what they used to sell it for. When my dad found out he tried to claim 1/2 of the money because he bought it in the first place

That was the 1988 teenage me. I assure you that I've completely revamped my return policy.

I always try to return anything that is broken. At worst all they can tell you is no and half the time the person behind the counter doesn't follow the rules. I am taking back a maganvox vcr today because the buttons don't work, but that wasn't my fault it was in a box outside when it got wet with the rain.

Yes, he should have. As it turns out though, I talked him out of taking any of it.

Sometimes I take shit back and don't put back the remote so you get the money for the item and you can ebay the remote you would be surprised how many people loose their remotes.

Hopefully most "companies" have taken a good look at their policies since '88 and adjusted.
