Miami's Martin leaves team after 'emotional breakdown'

Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

By Dan Hanzus

An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

Before this happened I had no clue as to who Incognito was and still don't care. The same goes for Martin.

The thing being is Martin is mentally soft.

I suspect that his rant was an alcohol fueled one.

We've all had those.

It doesn't matter. It can't go both ways. That's just making excuses for him. Maybe he should toughen up.

Or maybe he thought that the shit wasn't worth it. I'm making no excuses for him, I really don't care.

I felt it was more of an explanation of the idiocy.

If he got suspended for a year, tough.

This is true. He was always super nasty.

In years past I rooted for the Chiefs to try and pick him up. I think your O line NEEDS a guy with a nasty streak sometimes. And, hes a adequate to good guard.

Now, of course, there is so much drama around him he's a no go. But just because a guy plays with a mean streak should not preclude you from wanting him on your team.

Everyone needs to just start ignoring this mess. Neither guy is the norm and are both the exception. These are not the people society should use to judge what the culture of anything is.

Yeah, I think a mean streak is great for a lineman. But this guy is just too much trouble. If it's a more important position maybe you consider it... but you don't need all this drama with an interior lineman. I wonder if anyone will touch the guy.

Yeah, its something of a risk to go get him, but he may end up being something of a bargain.

I was researching the guy the other day, and while I couldn't find anything definitive for 2013, I DID find some game by game reviews for him on PFF for 2012, most of which were glowing.

In a game against the Jets for instance, I got this among others... "he drove the redoubtable Mike DeVito 4 yards off the ball for a huge NY gain"... minutes later in the game... "he pulls right and absolutely decleats (some jet I cant recall) for another huge gain.

Same game final review, more or less word for word... "he was a brutal mauler in the run and absolutely perfect all game in pass pro".

I forgave Vick and many others over the years... yeah, I could forgive this guy, especially if we bring him here to whip some ass for KC.

The only thing abnormal here is that an NFL locker room got a rare exposure for its sophomoric views and he man culture... to think its WAY different in 90% of the league is probably being naïve.

This dude will start in 2014, don't kid yourselves, he's too talented at what he does... and frankly, I wouldn't mind if he started here.

"because racecar" has been a thing for a few years on Jalopnik tracking back to some craigslist add. No idea if that is the origin but would be amusing it somehow spread that far.

Yep. If he's available on the cheap, I would hope that the Chiefs at least look into it.

Have people not seen his track history? Dude makes Terrell Owens look like the consummate teammate.
