Mark Cuban says 'horrible' state of college basketball hurting NBA

DALLAS -- The "horrible" state of college basketball is hurting the NBA, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said.

Cuban said he doesn't enjoy watching the college game, but his bigger concern is that the physical, slow-down style that has become common in the NCAA results in prospects who are poorly prepared to jump to the NBA.

"If they want to keep kids in school and keep them from being pro players, they're doing it the exact right way by having the 35-second shot clock and having the game look and officiated the way it is," Cuban said Wednesday night. "Just because kids don't know how to play a full game of basketball.

"You've got three kids passing on the perimeter. With 10 seconds on the shot clock, they try to make something happen and two other kids stand around. They don't look for anything and then run back on defense, so there's no transition game because two out of five or three out of five or in some cases four out of five kids aren't involved in the play.

"It's uglier than ugly, and it's evidenced by the scoring going down. When the NBA went through that, we changed things."

Cuban, an Indiana alumnus often asked by disgruntled Hoosiers to buy out coach Tom Crean's contract, said he is actually a fan of Crean because he coaches a faster-paced, freer-flowing offense than the vast majority of his NCAA counterparts.

Cuban hopes that the NCAA's rules and officiating style change to allow faster offenses to succeed instead of rewarding teams that milk the clock and play boring basketball.

"It's horrible. It's ridiculous," Cuban said. "It's worse than high school. You've got 20 to 25 seconds of passing on the perimeter and then somebody goes and tries to make a play and do something stupid, and scoring's gone down.

"The referees couldn't manage a White Castle. Seriously, the college game is more physical than the NBA game, and the variation in how it's called from game to game [is a problem]. Hell, they don't even have standards on balls. They use different balls. One team's got one ball, the other team's got another ball. There are so many things that are ridiculous."

I remember thinking the NBA refs looked like people that had been passed up by the WWF/WWE. I can't stand watching the NBA. I saw a ticker that some team scored 116 points, did the other team stop at half court on D? Regular season ratings have gone down year to year for a very long time in the NBA.

I still prefer college ball, which isn't true of any other sport. Having 1 ball for the league makes sense. Way too many TO's, under 12, under 8, under 4, plus 5 TO's per team. Plus the TO when someone fouls out.

Fixing refs is an every league issue.

Cuban is an ass. He's basically complaining that he doesn't like the NBA's farm system.

It isn't the NCAA or a college coaches responsibility to train players for the NBA. If he's that concerned about it, he should get his league to allow high schoolers to enter the draft and set up a real farm system/minor league/D-league.

He's right about a lot of that. Of course, I still prefer college ball over the NBA. But I do watch some NBA games. Cuban might also recognize the fact that the stupid NBA one and done rule could also be part of the blame. Guys aren't in school long enough to have some of those team concepts drilled into them.

But sounds like he's saying that college is actually ruining them for the pros. If that's the case, then less time in college is better.

He basically wants someone to groom future NBAers for the NBA. That's not college b-ball's responsibility, especially considering that only a very small number of them are going to play in the NBA in the first place.

It's not surprising to me that people that don't live in an NBA town and have likely never seen an NBA team live and in person, prefer the college game.

That said, Cuban is right.

The "problem" with making the changes he's suggesting is that the NCAA tournament, a gigantic cash cow for the NCAA, would be boring as hell.

The reason it works now is that athletes that have no business in the NBA can slow down a game to a point where upsets occur. If they shortened the play clock and fixed the officiating, there would be maybe 16 truly elite teams with elite athletes that play an NBA-style game. We'd see a ton of 80-40 games because there just aren't that many shooters available and with no way to slow down the opposing team, most games would end in blowouts.

This is not really true. Sure, there have been many "One and Done's" over the years but the overwhelming majority of NBA players put in 3-4 years in the college game.

I think you're missing the point, entirely.

Cuban isn't stating that he wants the college game to be like the NBA. He's stating that the college game is broken, which most people do agree. When the NBA's game was broken, they implemented rules to fix it and the NCAA should step in and fix their game as well.

I'm with Cuban on this one--shorten the shot clock, make the game more about skill and less about being a thug because the game has become too physical. The game has become boring. Increased scoring would be good for the game.

The one of the things he seems to be over-looking is that good defense in the NBA is the difference between pretenders and real contenders. Playing good D should count for something, but not as a means to slow down the game...zone defense makes things even worse.

I don't take it like that. It sounds more like he's saying that if colleges want to have guys ready for the NBA they're not doing a good job.

I doubt he's that concerned about it as a farm system. Kids only have to play one season and then they could play in the DL or the NBA. He has a DL team right in the same city, really.

I don't even really see where he says it's hurting the NBA, unless I missed something.
