Ten Things About Today's Game Week 2: KC 42 PIT 37

Ten Things About Today’s Game: Week 2 KC 42 PIT 37

10. Last time KC won in Pittsburgh, it was 1986 in a stadium that doesn’t exist any more. Honestly, today I didn’t think we’d win, but hoped Showtime would play well and make it an interesting battle. It was an interesting battle, all right. Pittsburgh was 4.5 point faves at home, but were down by three TDs early on. Chiefs came out and got the critically important fast start, which we’ve been saying all the way back to pre-season is key to a winning formula. The first quarter start was a thing of beauty. Pittsburgh’s fans were booing their team, on opening day, at home. Cry into those towels you Fat Pierogie Eating Black and Gold Bastards!

9. Refs decided 28-0 would be too much of a lead for National TV, so they waived off a defensive TD on a Houston strip sack and Chris Jones fumble recovery. They called a mystery holding call on Scandrick which was never shown on TV -our Douchebag Friend Dan Fouts just glossed over it. Second quarter was time to get Steelers back into the game, as Rapistburger was allowed to throw a ball a yard past the line of scrimmage ala Horse Face, That wasn’t seriously reviewed by the zebras either. On every Steelers drive in the second quarter; Pittsburgh’s line would blantantly hold, Rapistburger would have all frickin' day to throw to a finally open receiver, or KC would be called for DPI or defensive holding to sustain a drive. Steelers were awarded six first downs on penalties. Second half was called a little more even once the TV audience was secured. Both teams were penalized a dozen times. The biggest one was the next to last play when the Steelers roughed Colquitt. It was so obvious they had to call it, and that iced the game. That play was very Raiders-like in terms of game killing stupidity. Bravo Pittsburgh.

8. Showtime tied Len Dawson’s all time team record with six TDs in one game. To accomplish that on the road in Pittsburgh is remarkable. Showtime had one more TD than incomplete passes. Think about that for a minute. Rapistburger threw the ball 32 more times in this game than Patrick. Again, think about that for a minute - 60 passing attempts in one game. Chiefs ran as a team for over 100 yards, and the defense gave up less than 35 yards rushing. Part of that is due to no Bell in the house. When we came into the season, the defensive mantra was, for this year, we were going to stop the run especially after what Tennessee did to us in the second half of last year’s playoff loss. We’ve done that. Bad news is, this defensive group gave up over 450 yards passing, and still we managed to win. D-Backs had trouble with Ju-Ju Boo Foo (targeted 19 times) and The Outlaw Jesse James, but shut down Antonio Brown (targeted 17 times). Last week we said KC would probably have to score in the high 30’s to win any game this year. Today they hung on to win by five after scoring more than 40. We had the better gun with a little more ammo in the shootout today.

7. Both teams had one sack. If you watch throughout the game, you can see Pittsburgh’s line blatantly holding, literally pulling the jersey off of KPass and Houston. Watch the Houston strip sack that got waived off. You can see Houston’s jersey being pulled almost clean off his back. Terrible. I think the marquee QBs in the league like Brady, Rodgers, Rapistburger, Breese, their lines are going to be allowed to hold and never be called. That's just the way it is.

6. Another thing that occurred to me: In the fourth quarter, Kareem Hunt was steamrolling Pittsburgh. We were able to run clock to bleed the game away. Even if Pittsburgh doesn’t rough the punter, they would have only had about 12 seconds with no time outs from their own 30 yard line to try to score a TD. Last year it was teams doing that to us. Running the ball right down our defense’s throat to grind us into the ground in the fourth quarter. I don’t see that happening this year. I do see a lot more track meets like today.

5. On the defense, Fuller played very well and Scandrick played better in the second half. We obviously miss Eric Berry back there. Houston played better, Ford played better, Speaks was still totally lost. He’s going to be like K-Pass was last year, in over his head till he grows up a bit. Hitchens and Ragland missed a few tackles; Murray got totally punked by Rapistburger on a blitz, shed like a long haired cat in the summertime.

4. One thing Alex used to do was spread the ball around. I think Patrick is also very good at that. Today it was seven guys with catches. This week it was the Kelce show: 109 yards and 2 TDs. Watkins got 100 yards. Hill had 90 yards and a TD. Conley had a TD -and a painful turnover inside of five minutes in the fourth quarter that can get your ass cut- and Robinson had a beautiful TD with his feet millimeters in bounds. I was very surprised the ref’s didn’t screw us on that call. I think that was a make good for Ben’s TD pass a yard past the line earlier in the game.

3. Special teams came into play twice that had a significant bearing on the outcome. One was Pittsburgh trying the only field goal of the game, and missing. And second was the roughing penalty on Pittsburgh to ice the game. Why Tomlin didn’t try an on-side kick at the end with just under two minutes left is beyond me. You’d think that would be the best shot at a win, and even if you don’t recover, you still can stop the clock three times with the timeouts. Weird to question the other team’s time management as that’s usually one of Andy’s weaknesses. That played in our favor. Good thing too, because our defense was gassed by the end of the game.

2. Steve Nelson came up lame and then went back in later in the game; not sure what his status is. Didn’t notice any other bad injuries, -Colquitt got whacked at the end, but didn’t seem to be seriously injured. That’s a relief, because usually the Steelers are really dirty and like to hurt people. Thought the Ware option pass on third down was a cool call. Andy continues to draw up Wile E. Coyote plays, and as long as they’re not used at critical times to lose games, it’s interesting to wonder what he’s going to come up with next.

1. 2-0, with both wins on the road, one win over a division opponent, one win over a long time nemesis. That’s an Andy Reid season start, flying out of the gate. There’s still great worry about the defense, but I don’t see any reason not to just enjoy this big win today and not worry about tomorrow until tomorrow. It will be fun to see Showtime start his first game at Arrowhead next week. Doubt if he throws six TDs again, but who knows? We’ve got a guy now. A QB gunslinger, a fearless leader, a bad ass home grown MoFo. And the best thing is, it looks like his year under Alex taught him enough about ball security and making good decisions that he’s way farther along in his learning curve than anybody could have expected. The future looks bright. How bout three an oh? Who's with me?

I have no idea where to put this post, so I'll just put it here.

Can you imagine the environment tailgating before the game this Sunday? Somebody brought up the excitement for the first game of Montana. I was there and was caught up in it. The feeling was amazing.

George, I bet you are looking forward to this game unlike you've looked forward to a game in a long time!

I think the number of those will be going way down since you can't overload one side.

He may have to have 2 "10 things" next week. One for the tailgating/pre-game and 1 for the game.

People are overlooking that KC did a really good job dealing with Antonio Brown.

If you told me he'd be targeted 17 times and not finish with like 150 yards, I'd think you were full of it.

If we could become known for only holding the ball for 2 series of downs unless we are running out the clock (which IMHO is stupid most of the time) we would be invinable.

Pass pass run
run TD pass!

I hope we never see anything that looks like Marty Ball ever again.

I love reading the opponent's city newspaper the morning after. Now suddenly, Tomlin is an idiot and the Steelers stink. Great stuff!

The Steelers certainly seemed to get ALL the calls or Non-calls in the first half. How did they NOT have a single OL holding call afetr what I saw was criminal. If I have to listen to that windbag Dan Fouts once more, I'll mute the sound and listen to Mitch on the radio instead even when it's behind the live feed. Dan Fouts is ruining the Chiefs experience.

6. Another thing that occurred to me: In the fourth quarter, Kareem Hunt was steamrolling Pittsburgh. We were able to run clock to bleed the game away.
This surprised me as I know our defense was gassed as Pittsburgh had run so many more plays and TOP was so much in their favor. Our Oline deserves a lot of credit for yesterday. They preformed much better!

2. Steve Nelson came up lame and then went back in later in the game; not sure what his status is.
He had cramps not worries. Colquitt seems fine. No injuries and against the Burgh, that's a good thing!

1. 2-0, with both wins on the road, one win over a division opponent, one win over a long time nemesis. That’s an Andy Reid season start, flying out of the gate.
There’s still great worry about the defense.
The future looks bright. How bout three an oh? Who's with me?
I would have been happy with 1-1 and didn't expect anything like this as I was a doubter believing Mahomes and the team would need time to adjust and the defense was bad. 2-0 is a thing of beauty.
Defense is horrible and I guess the bar is so low, no where to go but up! They have let up about 1,000 yards already in just two games but we won.
Indeed the future is really, really bright! I had high hopes but this is close to euphoria, something Chiefs fans haven't felt in a very long time!
Thanks GB and hope your new fridge provided you a lot of cold beers during the game!

The greatest surprise for me aside from starting 2-0 on the road against two tough teams is that Mahomes looks so damn poised and like a 10 year vet. I see no happy feet, no fear, no dumb decisions, ability to read the defense like a seasoned pro, he gets to the line quickly and has time to analyze the defense and lastly, HE GOES DOWNFIELD AS FIRST OPTION!!!

What a wonderful position to finally be in to see a true QBOTF and potential Hall of Famer at 23 years old on our roster.

We gotta get the defense better and it will be impossible to stop the Chiefs, only we will stop ourselves!!!

HAIL TO THE CHIEFS AND LETS MAKE IT 3-0 NEXT WEEK!!!

Heh, the new fridge is making lots of ice now. I had a couple of those Bud Special Summer red ales and a good shot of KC Reiger's Whiskey. I've become fond of that stuff, like it as much or more than Crown Royal. It's pricey, just bought a bottle to take to the lake next month. It was around $38 at Hy-Vee. https://www.winechateau.com/products...ey-kansas-city

From what I can see it is about the same price as Crown. https://www.totalwine.com/spirits/am...ey/p/150264750

Anyone ever try the Left for Dead???

Could you elaborate on the mouth, spiciness, flavors and smoothness. My best bud is a die hard Crown drinker, I am constantly trying to find something that will send him into trying some of the great entries into small batch bourbons.

The only thing I ever got him to prefer to Crown was some Booker's reserve stock that I let him taste over 10 years ago. He never got a bottle from the case i was given because he whined about twice the price.

If it will convert a man with excellent taste such as yourself, I will buy him a bottle just to make him whine every time he has to drop an addl' $10 a bottle as no booze is cheap in Liberty.

Thanks for the lead. Sorry to hear about you drinking Bud's garbage.

Well, I usually like Boulevard beers, but the Buds were free. Left at my house by a friend of mine. I usually keep Bud or Busch on my back porch beer fridge after mowing the lawn. I'm not a hard core beer snob. I can drink a Busch or Hamm's occasionally on a very hot sweaty day if it's ice cold.
