Well the disaster garden is complete. I could go in to detail but the weather pretty well cooked HCFGarden. The good news is I am on a mission to fix the claypile I call a garden.

I have a client who raises high end thoroughbred race horses and he has been good enough to call me when his manure spreader is full and i drag it home unload it into my compost bin and return the rig.

I brought home the 5th 3 cubic yard load today finally filling the compost bin. My compost is hitting about 160 degrees inside the pile and is on track to be great next year. 15 cubic yard of cooking black gold.

Ill haul another 12 yards and apply to the garden before fall tilling this fall.

Big rain storm soaked everything west of us, came within 20 miles. At one point it was raining to the north, south, east, and west of us.





I'll trade my corn for the corn up there. Much of the corn South of us has already been chopped. Mine isn't far behind unless it rains just damn fast.

My FIL lives south of Manhattan and everything up there looks flat out awesome. Dryland corn up there looks WAAAY better than anything we have under a sprinkler.

FYI...corn in Bates, Cass county Mo is coming in at 20-30 bu max, lots being chopped for silage...but 20 bu corn silage wont make a turd in January....pretty well a wipeout for many producers here. Hay prices will be out of sight this winter and next spring. Beans at best will be 1/2 crop if we dont get frost early. Our beans in 30 inch rows have not filled the rows yet.

Crop insurance will save many. Those who dont have it are done.

Sorry to hear about your corn crop. These type years are really hard on farm communities. Most of the milo around looks OK. A few fields refuse to kick a head, but most of it is OK. My corn is (somehow) hanging in there for the most part, but it is a long way from the bin. We did have a couple fields that didn't pollinate, so they are done, but I'm not chopping it. To me, the nutrients (Anhydrous is $750 a ton ) and mainly the residue is worth too much to me. Dad chopped some corn for silage in 97 and it was a damn disaster. It barely paid the harvest bill and took all the nitrogen since it had tasseled. To rub salt in the wound, he had to chisel it because it blew in the winter. Of course the next crop was crap, and it took a lot of years for the soil to recover.

Who the hell doesn't have crop insurance? That's cheap money, man.

All the cow guys around here are saying hay is already super expensive, and they were feeding it in June because the grass never greened up. That makes cash flowing any calves awful tough.

This is a very significant drought we are caught in.

I pulled my weak producing maters. In the beds I had onions and where the weak maters were, I've planted fall taters, radishes, bush beans, and a fella told me Okra will do fine if I like them smaller, which I do. So I planted some Okra also. Berries were doing great this year till the birds got em. I'm gonna have to net them next year.

This season has taught me that my culling skills are weak. My refusal to thin and hack away when necessary has prevented full potential. Valuable life skill.

MO, what vinter crops did you start? I've got two flats empty that I need to get something into. I've got fall taters, radishes, bush beans, and okra in and they are growing to beat hell. What else should I put in?

SOME OF THESE ARE HALF FLATS SOME ARE FULL.

Broccoli
cauliflower -snowball, purple of sicily
b. sprouts - L.I. improved
cabbage - red, dutch flat
lettuce - little gem, tom thumb,batavian
swiss chard
mixed salad greens i cant ever remember the name of

you can get snow peas and bush beans(Top crop) in now. you could probably get away with planting early sunglow corn. 53 days.
