Baldur's Gate Website Surfaces, Announcement Coming Soon

Posted by BuckGB at 6:06 pm on 02.28.2012

It's been nearly 11 years since Throne of Bhaal brought the Baldur's Gate series to a legendary and satisfying close, but now... something is stirring behind the scenes. We don't know what it is just yet, exactly, but what we do know is that there's now a theme song-playing Baldur's Gate teaser site online and that former BioWare designer Trent Oster and his crew over at Beamdog are behind it.

Does this mean we're going to be getting some kind of a remake in the same vein as MDK2 HD? Or perhaps an iOS, Android, or console port like Interplay and Beamdog teamed up for previously? Or maybe, just maybe, it will be an entirely new game in the Baldur's Gate franchise? We don't know, and when we quizzed Trent about it, all he'd say is:

Quote:
We're not related to the Steam complete edition, I can tell you that much. Other than that, we're hoping to announce something soon.

That "complete edition" he mentions was already sleuthed last week, so apparently this is something totally different. To add to the mystery, there are comments left for us in the teaser site's source page:

Quote:
Shadowy Figure- Raise Dead : Infinity Engine

For years, I clung to the memory of it. Then the memory of the memory.

And then... it returned. Better than it was before.

Pore over the tapestries and works of art hanging from our walls if you wish, Child of Bhaal... perhaps you will find a clue. But patience, ah... patience would reveal it all.

As the silver moon waxes and wanes, so too does life.

Let your imaginations run wild, Bhaalspawn.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition Coming to iPad

Infinity Engine on iOS

March 22, 2012
by Justin Davis

Overhaul Games put weeks of speculation to rest today, officially announcing that Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition will be available for iPad this summer, alongside the PC release.

The iPad port will include all the improvements and additions found in the PC version, including full integration of the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion pack. The title is also running on the refined Baldur's Gate II Infinity Engine, allowing gamers to experience the original adventure with the sequel's refined graphics options and other engine tweaks.

Overhaul has promised that Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition will also feature brand-new story content including more quests and a new party member. Although these details are for now under-wraps, the company has promised that all of the additional story content will also make its way onto the iPad.

I had the opportunity to go hands-on with an early build of Baldur's Gate iPad, and my initial impressions leave me optimistic about the potential of this huge port. For now, Overhaul is primarily demonstrating that this is indeed Baldur's Gate, running on an iPad. It exists, it runs smoothly, and as a company representative put it, "the technical issues are behind us."

What hasn't yet been changed is the interface. With the PC version's tiny buttons, very small dialogue selections and incredibly complex menus displayed on an iPad, right now it's tough to effectively play with a touch interface. Overhaul has promised that revised, touch-friendly menus are in the works.

The iPad port's revised pan and zoom camera control shows the potential of a more "player friendly" Baldur's Gate iPad experience. The camera has been fully optimized for iPad and works in the way players expect. They can pinch to zoom their viewpoint in and out, and a simple drag of the finger moves the camera anywhere around the map. A button toggle locks the camera and enables drag selection boxes, making it easy to select multiple enemies in hairy combat situations.

Although the iPad is generally considered a more casual games platform, the potential for games like Baldur's Gate is obvious. This early build proves that there is absolutely no reason rich role-playing experiences can't shine on tablets.

IGN will have much more on BG1's iPad progress in the coming weeks and months.

I loved playing Baldurs Gate II with my brother. Good times. Haven't played Neverwinter Nights. Guess I should check it out? I don't care if it looks dated. I love old school games. I play NES and SNES more than 360 or PS3 probably.

Baldur's Gate 2 enhanced edition launched today. I'm barely started my new playthrough of BG1EE so I'll be holding off until it's on sale at steam (currently $25, I got BGEE for like 5 this summer...). Will say that BGEE looks great after last week's 1.2 patch.

I'm not getting a reliable read from my sarcasmometer here. If you're serious and talking about the enhanced edition patch, I think it's actually been patched twice since the problems between beamdog and atari ended.
