Miami's Martin leaves team after 'emotional breakdown'

Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

By Dan Hanzus

An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

Wow, people get very upset and defensive because someone wondered if maybe it was a sexual orientation thing. I think if it came out that is was homophobic bullying it would raise concerns for other gay NFL players debating coming out in a locker room environment.
But I guess speculating on it has to be met with, "How dare you wonder if it was related to him being gay. HOW DAAARRRRE YOU!"
Kind of seems like knee jerk BS really.

Well I know me, and I know what I have heard from and about Mike Wallace so I know who's judgment I trust on this one.

I also keep hearing over and over and over that Incognito is a piece of shit and I see he has a history of being a piece of shit.

Feel free to believe Mike Wallace if you like.

Well, does it really matter what words were being used? Someone was bullying someone else. A bully is going to use whatever words he thinks will stick.

I doubt if this would have been a story before the 24/7 sports media, honestly. It's only remarkable because Martin quit the team over it.

Maybe it's just me. I had a lot of trouble caring about the Saints and their bounty "scandal" at all because that probably happens on every team and always has. It was only a story because the NFL overreacted out of liability concerns.

Maybe this is the same thing. The NFL overreacting out of liability concerns, or just concern that there is some bad PR being had.

I don't think it "matters" in a sense of what the end result is, obviously Incognito should be kicked off the team.
I just think it's an interesting hypothetical avenue for discussion; not anything I'd need to spend a great deal of time discussing, but it's also not a hypothetical that I feel like I should be outraged by. If it were related to sexuality it could fit into recent discussons on whether NFL locker rooms are ready for a player to come out.

I think he should be kicked off the team for being a toxic person, but other than that, I'm waiting to hear some detail as to why this is really a story, unless the remarkable factor is just Martin's fragility

Exactly. Thank you. It's hard for me to understand why that isn't obvious.

If he is a racist asshole I somewhat surprised he didn't get tuned up a long time ago. It is not like there a shortage of black badasses in the NFL~

Would it be ok for the cheerleaders to share locker rooms with the players? Get dressed, shower and change with opposite sex?
Of course not. And most players don't feel comfortable doing the same with other dudes that like their parts.

It will be interesting to hear the whole story if we ever do. It won't surprise me if we don't though.

I would think that if Martin was extraordinarily fragile, or weird for that matter, we'd have heard stories from his college teammates by now. In fact, I think it's odd that we haven't heard any stories, positive or negative, about him by now. Although I guess we did hear a little bit about pro scouts being concerned with softness.

I wouldn't be surprised if Martin's mom once filed bullying charges against another teams head coach for beating her son's team while the team said he was like a female anatomy part.

Martin shouild never have to feel threatened at his place of work just because Incognito was raped by his uncle 20 years ago.

I am going to guess that the kind of bounty program in New Orleans was way beyond typical, just as the type of bullying was way beyond typical here. They are stories because: 1) they went over the line; 2) just because the NFL has always done something one way, doesn't mean it shouldn't be evaluated. It's amazing how many excuses we make for NFL players because of "tradition."

Forcing rookies to pay a shitload of cash for his teammates is a perfect example. It amazes me that people defended that practice in this thread. That has no place in the game. Period.
