Mid-afternoon bullshit: In defense of Ryan Succop

I'm always a fan of adding competition for placekickers during training camp no matter how good they are. The Chiefs should absolutely get some more kicking bodies this training camp, either from the pool of undrafted rookies or from some random homeless veteran kicker.

But some of you are acting like Succop is the worst field goal kicker the team has ever had. You don't remember that we actually burned a 5th round pick on Justin Medlock, only to cut him two weeks into his rookie season. You don't remember how many easy botched kicks Lawrence Tynes used to have or how Morten Andersen could only kick anything under 45 yards, or how Pete Stoyanovich whiffed on game-winning kicks all the time.

In his (albeit brief) NFL career, Ryan Succop has ONE game-losing miss. And it was in a meaningless game that had zero bearing on playoff seeding. Reid even didn't give a shit about that game by putting in all backups and resting the best players. That one game has been the only time in which his failure has directly led to a Chiefs loss.

Adam Vinatieri had a game just like that early in his career. And it was against the Chiefs, too. In 1999 during Week 5, the Patriots trailed 16-14, but were set up to kick an under-40 yard field goal as the last play of the game. Vinatieri missed the kick, and the Chiefs won.

Give me any of the great kickers in NFL history and they've all had games like that. Games. Plural.

Succop has ONE thus far.

Bring in competition, sure, and if he gets beat fair and square, then great. The Chiefs will get a better kicker. But quit acting like he's AIDS. He's not.

I forget exactly what it was, but someone posted some EXTREMELY damning stats on the guy back when the disappointment was still fresh... like I say, I dont remember exactly what it was, but it sure wasnt good.

And his kickoffs are pure junk... he may not be the worst ever, but there certainly isnt anything special about him, either.

His kicking percentage from beyond 50 is probably in the bottom 10 among active starting kickers. I'm guessing, anyway.

But that's about all I can really find wrong with him. Who gives a shit about his kickoffs, either? He doesn't have a Janikowski leg, but he consistently puts them in the end zone. How many times did teams run back a kickoff beyond their own 30 this season? I can probably count the number of times on one hand.

Like to add that he came back the next week after the missed kick and made 3 out of 3 kicks that went right down the middle.

2 of those were from beyong 40 yards.

He's a middle of the road guy in my opinion. We can do better. But its not priority number 1 considering our cap situation.

Absolutely. The truly terrible starting kickers out there in the NFL allow themselves to go through ruts. When they get in those ruts, your team is at a huge disadvantage. Missed field goals can happen to anybody, but when they tend to occur in streaks, that's when you need to go out and find a more reliable kicker.

Succop has never had a rut. His kicking percentage has always been adequate or good.

There's no reason why John Dorsey should waste time this offseason actively trying to replace Succop.

Yeah. I had a brainstorming session after the Chiefs last cut Brock, but none of the ideas were that good. I'm open to suggestions if you have any.

The only two times that a team should be worried about a kicker is either when he's specifically losing multiple games for you or when you're a SB caliber team and there is a significant upgrade available.
