Talks with Eric Berry for extension 'ramping up'

Per Ian Rapoport.

To the few out there who think we don't need this guy for a good price, happy to see that the front office is of course on the right side.

That's stupid. Berry has missed nearly an equivalent of two years. And while Thomas may get more INTs, Berry is far and away a better tackler.

It's far from "stupid".

Berry's not a ball hawk and he's not a game changer.

He's a very good tackler and a "locker room leader".

That isn't worth $10 million or more per.

I would say Berry barely, and I mean barely, is a top ten safety in the NFL and you could easily call that generous. The Bills game in particular where he was supposed to be helping on the outside WRs and the CBs got burned 3-4 times and CP was livid with the corners. I didn't see a single poster mention or notice that Berry was a yard or two away from the catch at most and he showed zero burst or even urgency to break up the play. He lolly gagged to the tackle ala Bartee and didn't even play the ball. If he had exploded or showed any sense of urgency in the final five yards of his pursuit he could have easily broken up at least 2 of them.

Jesus, hunted this down and it just pissed me off. He could have blasted Watkins easily and saved two TDs. "Top 2" safety my ass, got his ass handed to him by big bad Tyrod Taylor over and over again. I mean I appreciate the leadership and obviously the cancer thing is cool, but IMO just not that great of a player.

He's a good player....easily the most over-hyped member on the team. KC would be OK without him...he's not a make or break like Houston or DJ. You need good safeties...KC already has 3 or 4 that would come much cheaper. They have no one to fill S.Smith's role...and that's a huge void.

His ability to come from the FS position and make these tackles near the LoS is 2nd to none. He has elite range and is one of the most sure tacklers in the NFL. He makes pinpoint accurate dives to tackle ball carriers with an aggressiveness that most DB's in the NFL don't match. Those extra yards pile up. You get 4th and 1's because of tackles like the ones Eric Berry makes. That's game changing.

Calling him a "very good tackler" is an understatement.

You're getting an All Pro FS. An All Pro SS. He's proven it on the field. Lets not act like this is his first year receiving accolades. The man has been ballin' since his rookie season.

6 Years. They usually have you figured out after 6 years in the NFL. Yet people can't stop raving about Eric Berry. You know why? Because he's that good.

He was a premiere box safety and some of you said, "Oh but you don't pay a box safety that much". Then he became an all pro FS and you're giving us the same BS line.

But you're right. In his 1.5 years of playing FS, he hasn't amassed as many interceptions as Earl Thomas has while playing FS his entire career. But that's ok, because if that's the one hole in his game, if we can call it that, then it still doesn't offset everything else that Eric Berry does so well.

He is a top 3 player at his position despite his lack of interceptions. Pay him top 3 money.

They have no one YET. You have no idea who will be in that spot. This time last year hardly anyone was talking about Marcus Peters.

The Chiefs are a winning team without Eric Berry.

But Eric Berry's presence means little without Houston, Hali, Ford, Poe and now, Peters.

He is not and has never been a game changer.

We debated this topic all last season and I firmly believe that the Chiefs can replace Berry with a player that costs half as much and see little to no dropoff defensively.

Well...if finding another Peters were so easy....CB's wouldn't continually be drafted in the top 5. Chiefs hit the jackpot...expecting that to happen again would be a poor strategy. Peters had the most targets last year...guess who was on the other side?

You dont go cheap on CBs.....

Sean Smith was pretty cheap.

Being pragmatic....losing Smith will cost KC a high pick and save the Raiders one. Oakland wins big time in that scenario....

That was a suggestion by one internet sportswriter that somehow caught legs.

But hey, if they want to wreck their cap on a 29 year old CB, so be it.

No.

The Chiefs will get a third round compensory pick for Smith unless they sign a free agent to a decent sized deal, in which it'll drop down to maybe a fifth.

If they don't, they'll get a third and probably draft a player in the first three rounds.

If KC loses Smith ...they have no one ready to fill in...comp picks or not..they have a 3 year window. ..now. Not signing him means using a high pick on his replacement...it's a two-fold hit.
