Covitz:Alex Smith will play entire first half of Sunday’s preseason game

Alex Smith will play entire first half of Sunday’s preseason game

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said starter Alex Smith would likely play the entire first half on Sunday night at Carolina, but the rest of the quarterback rotation has not been determined.

The starting offense struggled in the preseason opener against Cincinnati, going three-and-out, settling for a short field goal and Smith lost a fumble when sacked. Smith said he had a simple goal for Sunday night: Hold onto the football.

“That was the biggest play for me in my (time on the field),” Smith said. “You look at two third-and-shorts that we didn’t convert, one on the run play and the last on the pass play ... miscommunication there with the receivers. You just can’t have it.

“To me, two plays jumped out — one, the fumble, you just can’t have turnovers. The second one, that third-and-2 down there, in the red zone, if you convert, you have a good chance of walking away with a touchdown. Those are big downs, we know that. You have to execute those and it’s all kind of in the details.”

I think it's a great idea as long as Bray and Murray get significant snaps. There is one QB on this roster that I do not give a **** about, his name is Chase Daniel. If Alex Smith goes down, we aren't winning shit regardless of whether Daniel or one of the two younger guys take over. Therefore, in my opinion, he should be the one cut. So, give Alex the first half of the next two preseason games to prove he's not an epic failure, and let Bray & Murray split the second half to see what they've got. And for heaven's sake, let them throw the ball while they're in the game. In the first preseason game, weren't most of Bray's snaps handoffs?

Daniel isn't going anywhere.

My first thought after the initial preseason game was that they're going to try to slip Murray through to the practice squad, and not show him at all during the preseason. And maybe, although less likely I think, try to showcase Daniel for a trade. We'll see how it plays out the next couple of weeks. If Murray's only in for the last two minutes again on Saturday, just handing the ball off, or doesn't play at all, then I'm gonna consider that in support of my little theory.

No way Murray makes it through waivers for the PS. Either we keep all four, daniel gets cut, or Murray gets "injured" and goes to IR

If by some horrible play we lost Alex for the year then not starting Bray would be plain stupid. Why not give the kid a shot.

"To prove he (Smith) is not an epic failure." You do realize you're talking about a few halves in a PRESEASON game correct??

No chance he would make it through waivers. You are way undervaluing the position and potential. He only went in the draft low because if his injury.

Didn't say it would work, only that they would try it. I think it's a bad idea myself.

And it's a bit of a tangent but it never fails to amaze me just how short-sighted some of the fans are when it comes to cutting Murray and/or Bray. It's like they can't see anything beyond 2014, or understand that players can develop and improve.

Daniel is done. Best case traded for a low pick. Worst case he's cut.
