I never really opened up much over the last 7 yrs. Maybe some of you know - but; others may not. I lost my business in January. T'was a good run from '10-'17 however; Once we came home from Afghanistan spelled doom for my company - as my customer's client held a military contract for laptop repair for the marines in Leatherneck/Bastion (Helmand Province) - I almost lost everything. I never went bankrupt but chances are my leasing company will sue me w/in 3 mos. or so. This all being said, I began a new job selling RMM tools for PBX systems and network environments.

Do any of you cold-call? That's pretty much my job now and it's going pretty good. My approach is simple, take your time when/once you connect live w/ a person - pronounce your words well and have plenty of volume - generally these folks will talk to you, I've found.

Who else cold-calls? Any tricks you'd like to share?

I used to keep them on the line as long as I could but the 4th time they ask a leading question and don't like what they heard they seem to want to move on. That's when I ask them if I kept them on the line long enough to where they won't had time to call my neighbors, cause they would do the same for me....

It is pretty funny that some dipshits think they're really sticking it to random telemarketers telling them they've won a cruise by talking to them at length. They're going to be there and calling people whether you talk to them or not. 45 minutes wasted with you is just 45 minutes off the clock that most likely would have been wasted with someone else. Except your valuable free time of 45 minutes was spent unpaid, on the phone with some other dipshit talking about something you don't care about.

I built my business in its early days, cusp of the 90's, using cold-calling exclusively. When more projects came in, I supplanted it with direct mail, followed up with a call, which was very effective. One of the largest design firms in the world, in NYC, was built using direct mail while first operating out of their apartment. I knew the owner, as he offered me a job. Back then, most would grant an interview/presentation and there seemed to be no hostility with it if it was business-to-business—unlike to personal lines ( which I despise myself.)

You can't do it today though. It's started getting more difficult as the 90's progressed with more recorded voicemail, caller ID etc being used. It's nearly impossible to make contact orally by phone these days, even in business-to-business. Just my experience.

Even 20 years ago phones were cordless. you could do what you needed to do and have some fun at the same time...

I did learn from it, I understood what mini closes were and how to use them better in a presentation but a few people on the phone would be good enough to build a question into a benefit question that you just looked stupid answering in a way that brought you into the sales path they wanted you on. Very few ever master that...
