Top 30 Basketball programs of all time....

Pretty much spot on.... Though KU has a shit ton of conference championships...

http://trianglehoops.blogspot.com/20...-analyzed.html

Triangle Hoops Journal has analyzed the ESPN/Sagarin rankings and has generated a more accurate all-time ranking of the top 30 programs in college basketball history. ESPN’s top 50 programs, multiple National Championship winners UConn, Florida and San Francisco, and Houston (5 Final Fours) were evaluated. The factors considered were National Championships, total wins, NCAA Tournament wins, Final Fours, and conference championships. In addition, a key component to the rankings was name recognition, which took into account whether the ranking made sense based on the program’s reputation and whether the program is generally associated with college basketball success. As a result of some of the problems with the ESPN/Sagarin rankings, the following rules were applied:

• A program without a National Championship cannot attain a top 10 ranking. The top 10 programs are the truly elite programs, and a program cannot seriously be considered as the best of the best without ever cutting down the nets.

• NCAA Tournament success was a major factor in are given more credit than any other factor. Therefore, in ranking programs with similar resumes, this was the deciding factor in which program deserved the higher ranking.

• A program with success in multiple eras was given more credit than a program with success in only one era. For example, Michigan State's two National Championships (79, 00) indicate greater long-term achievement and consistency than UConn's two National Championships (99, 04), and assuming all other factors were equal, Michigan State would earn the higher ranking.

Triangle Hoops Journal's Top 30 Programs:

The Top 6- These are the premier programs- a cut above everyone else. Each of these programs has excelled throughout multiple eras and have distinguished themselves from the other elite programs:

1. Kentucky: A close call between UK and UCLA, but Kentucky is #1in all-time wins (200 more than UCLA) and has had success dating back to the 1940s. Kentucky has 7 National Championships, 13 Final Fours, 100 NCAA Tournament wins and 26 conference championships.

2. UCLA: The Bruins' program could really be considered #1b. UCLA has 11 NCAA Championships, 17 Final Fours, 99 NCAA Tournament wins and 30 conference championships. Perhaps no program can match UCLA's legendary status, with the likes of Wooden, Alcindor, and Walton.

3. UNC: Carolina is just slightly below Kentucky and UCLA. The Heels have 5 NCAA Championships, 18 Final Fours (#1), 102 NCAA Tournament wins (#1), and is #2 in all-time wins. Kentucky and UCLA would probably be indistinguishable from UNC if the Heels had won one more NCAA Championship.

4. Kansas: The Jayhawks' program comes in just ahead of Indiana and Duke based on their 1970 all-time wins (#3), 13 Final Fours, 84 NCAA Tournament wins, and 3 National Championships spanning a period of 58 years.

5. Indiana: Indiana beats out Duke here because the Hoosiers' 5 NCAA Championships were won in several eras from 1940 to 1987. Indiana has not had as much recent success, but does have 8 Final Fours, 60 NCAA Tournament wins and 20 Big Ten Championships.

6. Duke: Duke has a strong case for the 5th or even 4th spot in the rankings. The Blue Devils have 3 NCAA Championships, 14 Final Fours (#3), 88 NCAA Tournament wins (#4) and 1876 all-time wins (#4). Their only weakness when compared with Kansas and Indiana is that all of their NCAA Championships are after 1990.

The Second-Tier: These are elite programs, but not quite on the level of the Top 6:

7. Louisville: The Cardinals have 2 NCAA Championships, 8 Final Fours , 60 NCAA Tournament wins, and 1587 all-time wins.

8. Michigan State: The Spartans have 2 NCAA Championships, 7 Final Fours, 10 Big Ten Championships, and 48 NCAA Tournament wins.

9. Syracuse: Syracuse was grossly underrated in the ESPN/Sagarin rankings. The Orange are #5 in all-time wins with 1753, have 4 Final Fours, 1 NCAA Championship and 50 NCAA Tournament wins. They have been incredibly consistent under Coach Boeheim.

10. Ohio State: Ohio State has 1 NCAA Championship, 10 Final Fours, 19 Big 10 Championships and has been the NCAA runner-up several times. The Buckeyes' success spans multiple eras, reaching Final Fours in seven different decades.

The Third-Tier: The programs in this tier have some flaws on their resume, but are generally a National Championship or a couple Final Fours away from being listed with the Second-Tier programs:

11. Michigan: The Wolverines have 1 NCAA Championship, 15 Big 10 Championships, 6 Final Fours and 42 NCAA Tournament wins.

12. NC State: The Pack has 2 NCAA Championships, 1540 all-time wins, 10 ACC Championships (#3), 3 Final Fours and 32 NCAA Tournament wins. Despite the Wolfpack's recent struggles, they have accomplished as much or more than the programs ranked below them and have had success in multiple eras.

13. Cincinnati: The Bearcats have 2 NCAA Championships, 1553 all-time wins, 6 Final Fours and 40 NCAA Tournament wins. Cincinnati is ranked below NC State because both of their NCAA Championships were won in the 1960s ('60 & '61), while NC State's were won in different decades under the leadership of different coaches.

14. Georgetown: The Hoyas were ranked 42 in the ESPN/Sagarin rankings, but have 1 NCAA Championship, 5 Final Fours, 45 NCAA Tournament wins, 10 Big East Championships and 1476 all-time wins.

15. Arkansas: Arkansas was another team underrated by ESPN/Sagarin. The Razorbacks have 1 NCAA Championship, 6 Final Fours and 40 NCAA Tournament wins. Their success has spanned multiple eras.

16. Villanova: Villanova has 1 NCAA Championship, 1505 all-time wins, 4 Final Fours and 48 NCAA Tournament wins (#8).

17. Illinois: Illinois has 1609 all-time wins, 5 Final Fours, 38 NCAA Tournament wins and 17 Big 10 Championships.

18. Oklahoma State: The Cowboys have 2 NCAA Championships, 1480 all-time wins, 6 Final Fours and 38 NCAA Tournament wins. Their ranking was hurt by the fact that their championships were won in the 1940s.

19. Marquette: Marquette has 1 NCAA Championship, 1423 all-time wins, 3 Final Fours and 34 NCAA Tournament wins.

20. Temple: Rounding out the Top 20 is Temple, which attained its ranking based on its 1711 all-time wins (#6), 2 Final Fours, 31 NCAA Tournament wins and 9 conference championships.

The Fourth-Tier: The programs have been either been pretty good for a long time or great for just a short time.

21. Notre Dame: Notre Dame is a perfect example of a team that has been pretty good for a long time. The Irish have not won a championship, but have 1651 all-time wins (#11), 1 Final Four and 30 NCAA Tournament wins.

22. Purdue: Purdue is a solid program with 1565 all-time wins, 2 Final Fours, 31 NCAA Tournament wins and has the most Big 10 Championships with 21.

23. Arizona: Arizona has 1 NCAA Championship, 4 Final Fours, 43 NCAA Tournament wins and 1568 all-time wins. The Wildcats have enjoyed most of their success during Lute Olson's tenure.

24. UConn: UConn, like Arizona, is a program that has been a great program for just a short time. The Huskies have 2 NCAA Championships, 3 Final Fours and 46 NCAA Tournament wins.

25. Utah: Utah is a consistently good program with 1637 all-time wins, 1 NCAA Championship, 4 Final Fours, 35 NCAA Tournament wins, and ranks in the top 10 in all-time winning percentage.

26. St. John's: St. John's is a program that has fallen on hard times, but has 1686 all-time wins, 2 Final Fours, 27 NCAA Tournament wins, and 5 Regular Season Big East Championships. St. John's is in the top 10 in all time wins and winning percentage.

27. Maryland: The Terps have 1 NCAA Championship, 2 Final Fours and 37 NCAA Tournament wins.

28. Wisconsin: The Badgers have 1 NCAA Championship, 2 Final Fours, 20 NCAA Tournament wins and 17 Big 10 Championships. This is a program that has been consistent, but never great.

29. Florida: Florida is a program that has been great over the past decade, but irrelevant in the past. The Gators have 2 NCAA Championships, 4 Final Fours, and 29 NCAA Tournament wins, but only 1192 all-time wins.

30. Houston: It was challenging to find a deserving 30th team, so the nod goes to Houston, based on the program's 5 Final Fours and fantastic teams of the late 60s, early 70s and early 80s, including the well-known Phi Slamma Jamma squad with NBA All-Stars Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon.

K-State quit on their BBall Program for nearly 15 years 1990-2005 (coincidentally, that's when they decided to start playing football). Prior to 1990, Street & Smiths had KSU's Program ranked in the Top 25 all-time - rightfully so.

A friend of mine emailed this to me, I think it was from a KSU message board. Anyway, on the eve of the Elite Eight match up between KSU & KU in 1988, here were the numbers:

[NCAA Appearances: KSU (18) - KU (18)]- - -[Sweet 16: KSU (16) - KU (13)]- - -[Elite 8: KSU (11) - KU (11)]- - -[Final 4: KSU (4) - KU (6)]- - -[Nat'l Champ: KSU (0) - KU (1)]- - -[Weeks Ranked #1: KSU (8) - KU (9)]- - -[Weeks in Top 5: KSU (62) - KU (49)]- - -[Weeks in Top 10: KSU (89) - KU (139)]- - -[Final Top 10: KSU (7) - KU (10)]- - -[Final #1: KSU (1) - KU (0)]- - -[Big 8 Champs: KSU (10) - KU (8)]- - -[Big 7 Champs: KSU (5) - KU (5)]- - -[KSU vs KU (Big 8): 39-37]- - -[KSU vs KU (Big 7): 13-15]

Honestly, after that loss to KU, it's almost as if the KSU Program was so demoralized, they couldn't find the strength to rebound - especially after KU won the NC.

Anyway, I agree with the above top 30 rankings. Pretty hard to dispute any of that.

Where is Missouri? I looked over the list and can't seem to find them. Surely I'm just missing them somewhere on the list.
