If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

we're following the right model
Exactly.

If we followed their model, we would have drafted Jordan in the first and Geno in the second and kept Cassel.

I'd MUCH rather have that...regardless of how I feel about Cassel...with Reid, we might have given him enough to get him back to tradeable.

Maybe even get 2 second rounders for him from some dumb team.

Alex Smith averaged 180 yards a game in his "good seasons"

Oh and that asshole dumbass fan guy thinks we shouldn't worry about him getting hurt. He didn't think he will get injured here. He didn't get hurt under harbaugh as much...

There was no way Cassel was going to be around.

nah....the other harbaugh did the same thing with the ravens

he spent multiple picks for a backup, passing on the risky Flacco...to stem the culture of losing

we're modeling ourselves after the two best coaches in the game, both who knew you needed cast-off veteran QBs as rookie coaches...both who knew that drafting risky QBs could destroy your franchise for a millennium (or maybe just 5-6 years: boller and smith)

Reid did the same thing in Philly...he traded multiple picks for a backup QB...he knew drafting mcnabb would destroy philadelphia forever

Many of the posters are going to learn real fast that Alex Smith was the best option at QB this offseason.

Leadership starts at the top and our top the past four years was a farcical malignancy.

In addition, our QB situation since /Trent Green has been laughable. Smith is as good as Green. Very similar players actually. He'll also have a better defense to support him than Green did and nearly the equal on offense.

I was all in for Geno and I'd have even been quite happy with Barkley, but Alex Smith is as good as they were going to get in terms of a proven player that was going to be a building block for this franchise in terms of going forward in a successful manner.
Never agreed more with any post on here

When Alex Smith is on the IR after his fifth concussion reduces his perception to ***** levels, I'll remember how lucky we were to go shower anal for SF.

(I have no doubt his level of play will be far higher than Cassel's, of course, but Smith is an enormous injury risk.)

The funniest part was that before the ink was dry on the paperwork to send Myth to KC, they were signing Chase Daniels to a contract that included a clause about him taking over in Alex Myths second year and throwing for 2000 yards and a bunch of touchdowns.

Why the **** do you idiots keep on saying this? Green had a 20 TD season before coming to the Chiefs. Alex Smith has NEVER done that. Green averaged 3 touchdowns a start in STL. Alex Smith doesn't even come close.

And I thought the #34 pick Dorsey paid was a ripoff. The conditional pick is like stealing candy from a baby. How do the Chief's NOT go 8-8 this year? Crap, you went 7-9 the year before. Chiefs should have held out for 10 wins minimum.

If you guys don't make 8-8 in your division, you should be embarrassed. As a 49ers fan, I can't thank you guys enough. The 49ers will have the 50th pick in the draft on your dime. Reid must REALLY LOVE Alex.

Ten bucks and a bag of doughnuts says Alex Smith gets his vagina bruised some way some how in the 2013 season.

We're going to start Chase Daniel at QB for at least one game, folks. Just think about that for a second. It doesn't seem so bad to us because we survived 5 games of Tyler ****ing Palko. To a normal non-desensitized NFL fan, however, that is a bone-chilling thought.
