Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Daniel Snyder signed numerous guys that were sought after. So did the Rangers during their go-'round with A-Rod, Chan-Ho Park, and others.

There was a time when Jim Cleamons was a hot coaching commodity due to his ties w/ Phil Jackson and the Bulls.

The problem with Clark Hunt is that he conflates the most "sought after" with the best. Given his level of access, if he were competent that would not happen.

I'm really interested in the Sean Smith/Demaryius Thomas matchup next year.

I'm glad we have a tall, strong CB to get in his ****ing grill.

Dude, he doesn't even run in the 4.4s.

He has some decent athletic ability and his height is a plus.

Don't think for a second he has elite athletic ability.

What happened with the great inside source knowledge that the Chiefs were seriously considering Geno? I call bullshit on you and your "source".

There's really no question Sean Smith has the physical tools to be a #1 corner.

There's a lot of things you could argue about Smith, but his physical tools are elite.

Sean Smith’s base deal: Three years, $16.5 million
Posted by Mike Florio on March 17, 2013, 7:12 PM EDT
Titans Dolphins Football AP

The 2013 cornerback market is worse than previously believed.

The contract signed by Sean Smith with the Chiefs widely was reported as being worth $18 million over three years, for a modest average of $6 million per year. In reality, it’s even more modest than that.

Per a source with knowledge of the contract, it has a base value of only $16.5 million, which equates to an average of $5.5 million annually.

Escalators and incentives can push the number to $18 million.

Also, only $7.465 million is fully guaranteed. The 2014 base salary of $3.45 million is guaranteed for injury only, and it becomes fully guaranteed on February 7.

So, basically, the top of the cornerback market is $5.5 million per year.

He's making half of what a elite corner makes.

He never said they were interested in only Geno.

He was one of a handful they are considering.

BossChief is the one exaggerating that report.

And lets not forget the Browns wanted to hire Pioli, but Lerner got a hard on for Mangini and hired him first. They still wanted Pioli, but Pioli wasn't going to work with Mangini. So he took the KC job.

So lets not sit there and praise the Browns for not hiring Pioli, because the Mangini/Kikonis move was even more of an epic fail...
