Father lets 8 year-old girl cry through 40 minutes of Batman movie

Our department took a field trip today to see the Dark Night movie, I arrived late so I had a seat by myself in the last row of the theater.

About 2/3 through the film after one of the huge explosion/demolition scenes, this little girl about 8 years old starts crying to her dad "Daddy I don't like this."

She then cried, sobbing and shaking and sniffing uncontrollably into his armpit for the final 40 minutes of the movie. He shooshed her and patted her back a lot, but never considered leaving.

I sat there in rage NOT because the girl was making noise, but because her idiot dad wouldn't realize that the poor girl was in hell and he was too selfish to take her out of there.

I tried to get his attention a couple times, but didn't want to start a scene in the middle of the film. It was like witnessing abuse. It really F'd me up.

After the movie ended I lost him in the crowd but finally caught him outside and stopped him and away from his kids I calmly said,

"Was it worth it? Did you really have to see the rest of the movie? Did you have to put your daughter through hell because you wanted to see the rest that bad?"

"well, if I knew she was going to cry I would not have brought her.."

"Yeah, but once she's sitting there crying, take her out of there. That was a bad movie for kids. It's not worth it. It's never worth letting your kid suffer. You owe her an apology, and you'd better do whatever she wants for the rest of the weekend because you need to fix this and let her know she's important because she's gonna have nightmares about this. You're a better dad than that...be better, okay?"

I was really, really, angry about it. I guess hearing kids in pain and people doing nothing about it is about one of the most upsetting things for me.

Anyway, just had to get that off my chest. My dad took me to Dawn of the Dead when I was 9 and I had nightmares for 4 years. So, maybe I have a personal connection to this.

It just really changes my perspective about what I'll do when my kids "inconvenience me." I've shooed them out of the room during football when I could have just paused it and taken five minutes to interact with them and catch back up while the team loses. It isn't worth it.

Kids only get one chance to grow up.

My mom hates scary movies. I went around for months saying "They're he-re" because I knew it freaked her out. I don't know if it was because of that or in spite of it, but I have rarely ever been scared by movies.

That said, there are definitely movies I won't watch with the kids. You just have to think of them first.

Yeah, I have no idea what they were thinking.

I barely remember it...but my mom has mentioned that I watched it and loved it. She admits it probably wasn't the best decision on her part to allow me to watch it.

An 8 year old can't be taken to see Batman really?

I was taken to see movies like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon/Lethal Weapon 2 when I was 8 or 9 years old...

And if you had crying and sobbing for a while, you parents hopefully would have taken you out of the movie.

Oh that was nice.

Your parents should get a special reward for exposing you to such foul language and harsh violence at such an early age.

And I was fine and still am fine, of course some kids can handle things others can't....

I grew up an only child for the first 10 years of my life that was mature for a child, I did alot of stuff with my parents and all that. My mom was in her late 20's when I was that age.

Teachers would tell my parents in elementary school I would talk to them like I was another adult more than a child.
