Looking to buy an RV

I am at the point in my life where I want to do some camping and relax...

I want to buy a New RV , I want about a 16footer but I want it to be super light.

Looked at scamps and Catista on the internet and really like those and would like to see similar brands to these.

I have a V6 Explorer with the towing package , I am very experienced obviously at pulling very heavy trailers but thats not what I want... Just want something light in the 10k-15k range I can pay cash for.

The hydraulics run off the battery or if you have it hooked up to power from your house or an RV campsite.
It takes all of 30 seconds to raise/lower. The only thing you have to be careful about is making sure you don't have anything on the counters when you lower it.
It's really not a pain at all.

Interesting, does it have to be fairly level when you raise it as well? My parents have a class a with three slides, but the mfg recommends having the rv leveled with the jacks before putting the slides out. Wonder if it's the same on this? Thanks for the info.

I don't think it needs to be 100% level, but I'm not sure. My parents driveway is slanted and they don't have a problem raising/lowering it.

I'd think that if it were at a steep angle, it would put strain on one side of the hydraulics. Not sure.

Yeah, those class A's he's referencing (Winnebago?) have tremendously complex systems that run those slideouts with lots of error indicators. I don't have any experience with Hi-Lo's, but I'd imagine it's a much simpler and more forgiving system, whether it's hydraulic or 12v.

I can't figure out if I would really like an RV or if I just like the concept of an RV. They seem really cool, but I'd want one that was really liveable with decent water supply, shower, toilet, etc. I'm not sure I can get that without spending house-type money.

My aunt and uncle have one of those really big fifth-wheel trailers. They generally drove it once or twice a year on a pretty long trip (week or more). I went in it once and it was amazing. It had more or less a full-size living room and they had satellite TV and everything. However, they decided a couple of years ago that between fuel costs and site rental costs, they're better off driving and staying in a hotel. So now it's parked, and probably won't move until fuel prices come down, if ever.

Is there a story behind your advice on the counters?

I just went to Cruise America to see what it costs to rent an RV. The cost to rent their two smallest units (sleep 3 and sleep 5) for a month were roughly $6,500 and $5,500.

That's insane. It's a 30 day rental. $200 a day? In 99 percent of the country you can stay in the nicest hotel for less than that, not to mention save a ton of money on gas. Maybe you can cook your own food in the RV, but I don't see it offsetting that type of cost.

Geez, for that money I'd buy an RV, use it for the month, and then sell it at a loss. I'd still come out way ahead.

It's a Monaco, but I imagine most of the slide systems are made by a handful of companies rather an proprietary to each coach mfg. I always figured it had something to do with torsion and having things pop off track if you put them in/out out of level. Just going up and down seems like less strain on the parts.
