Off Season Lets Talk Guns, Part 2

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

Scored me a 1943 Walther P38. All matching minus the barrel. Got it for $502 after shipping on gunbroker. Has a bit of pitting on the handle. Hoping it shoots without issues or blowing up my hand.

No news on the M1 Garand. It's breaking my heart waiting on CMP.

It sounds like the Missouri CC veto was overridden 24-6 and 112-41.

Becomes law in 30 days.

Missouri Republicans vote to override veto of gun bill

JEFFERSON CITY - For the second time Wednesday, Republicans turned to a parliamentary maneuver to kill a Democratic filibuster and force a vote on a bill, this time to override Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of a bill eliminating training and permit requirements to carry a concealed gun in public.

The maneuver, known as “calling the previous question,” was once rarely used — only five times in the Senate from 1970 to 2001, when Republicans captured the majority. But it’s now been used five times since 2014, including three times this year.

After shutting down debate Wednesday, the Senate voted to override the governor’s veto on a 24-6 party line vote. The bill moved to the House, where it was quickly approved 112-41.

It becomes law in 30 days.

Previously, gun owners could carry a concealed weapon in public by passing a criminal background check and completing a gun safety training class in order to get a permit.

On the final day of the 2016 legislative session, lawmakers approved a bill eliminating those requirements and allowing someone to carry a concealed firearm in public without a permit.

Nixon vetoed the bill because he said it would allow “individuals to legally carry a concealed firearm even though they have been or would be denied a permit because their background check revealed criminal offenses or caused the sheriff to believe they posed a danger.”

Joining Nixon in opposing the bill were groups representing law enforcement officers around the state, such as the Missouri Police Chiefs Association, along with the state’s four Catholic bishops.

Proponents have argued that the change is about public safety. The legislation, according to the National Rifle Association, “seeks to expand the fundamental right to self-defense of Missourians and strengthen their ability to protect themselves and their families.”

Sen. Brian Munzlinger, a Republican from Lewis County who sponsored the bill, said it simply “will allow law abiding citizens to protect themselves from criminals.”

Rep. Kevin Engler, a Farmington Republican, said gun-control advocates have made dire predictions about every gun bill that the Missouri General Assembly has ever passed.

“This bill will not do the cray things that are being said,” he said.

Kansas City Democratic Sens. Kiki Curls and Jason Holsman railed against the bill, saying it will make streets in Kansas City and St. Louis less safe.

“We should be concerned about the safety of our law enforcement officers and our constituents,” Curls said.

The wide-ranging bill would also reduce the penalty for carrying a firearm into buildings where it is not allowed from a felony to a misdemeanor and implement a so-called “stand your ground” law that says people no longer have a duty to try to retreat before using lethal force if they think their life is in danger.

The bill would expand the castle doctrine to permit invited guests in a home to use deadly force on intruders. And for those who still want to get a concealed-carry permit, the bill creates a lifetime version that never expires.

Rep. Kim Gardner, a St. Louis Democrat, said the bill sets up a “perfect storm” where the legal standard for using deadly force is lowered and firearm training is eliminated.

Holsman said he considers himself pro-Second Amendment but still opposes the legislation.

“You can be both pro-gun and pro second amendment and still think this is a bad piece of legislation,” he said.

While he also has problems with the “stand your ground” provisions, he said, “if this bill didn’t get rid of the training, I probably wouldn’t be against it.”

Ty Missouri Senate and House it was long overdue now citizen can defend themselves when police by no fault of their own are revenue collecting. As far as Jay Nixon soon he will exit the Missouri Governors Mansion as the most vetoed Governor in Missouri history. Do let the door hit you in the ass on way out causing you to fall on your face and bust your nose. Now even of lower income who want to be safe in there neighbor hoods can conceal carry without paying ridicules fees adopted to keep them from defending their families and property.

Currently I carry the Taurus 24\7 compact in .45, pretty much every day, most everywhere I go. Its a 10 round double stack, so I carry 11 total. It's a fat gun, to be sure. I carry at the 1 oclock IWB. I bought a cheap little Outbags USA nylon holster that clips on to the belt. It actually has great retention for a 12.00 holster, I like it. But...the gun is a bit fat.

I'm planning on switching carry to the afore mentioned Sig p320. It's a longer barrel, but seems to fit actually better on me than the Taurus, no printing at all.

No extra mags, but I've thought about it. The Sig came with 2 15 round mags, so maybe I'll look into that a little more.

Put about 250 rounds of Barnaul 115-grain 9mm through the PPX today, and other than a lot of dust to clean tonight there were no other ill effects. At $0.16 round that's not a bad result.

And the more I shoot the PPX, for the price, the more I like it.

Kind of new to this, figured I would ask the experts. I have been looking at a SHTF type of rifle. I've narrowed it down to the Ruger Mini 14, and the 10/22 takedown. I understand how each one works, cost difference, caliber difference, and how much a pain in the ass it seems to be getting .22 rounds. Any opinions of which gun fits better for "survivalist" purposes?

.22 is perfect for killing small animals, which would be a decent food source. Bullets are light if you have to be on the move.

It won't do much as far as self defense, though.

I would go with an AK or AR for protection in a SHTF world. A couple Mini's I have ran into didn't operate the way they should, but people that own them on this board can give you a better opinion of them.

I have two:

AR-15 BLK 300 for big varmints.

10/22 takedown for small varmints.

Easy to get .22 ammo if you buy it online. After the 10/22 purchase, went from zero to 3K rounds in 60 days. wikiarms.com is your friend. Even easier if you are close to a cabalas. Purchase online and pickup there.

Pumped. Got my 1943 Walther P38 today. It is in much better shape than I thought it would be. Gave it a good cleaning. No import marks, Nazi stamps on the slide, grip and barrel. Made at the Mauser plant.

Bass Pro in Olathe had .22 LR on the shelf last Friday buy as much as you want. Was about 10 bucks for 100 round packs. Guy at the gun counter said it was first time in 3 years there have been .22 on that shelf. Also scored 2 boxes of 22 mag but had to ask for that.

Was looking at a SIG P 320 I think was the model. Anybody got one....seems to have some good reviews out there on it. Have tried Glocks & Sigs but seem to shoot much better with the SIG so thinking about going that direction.

Glock 23-19 with hollow point ammo. When my pistol is set up for 9mm I use +p or +p+ HP ammo with Underwood ammo being my favorite. I also use Hornady +p self defense ammo in 9mm. If .40S&W I use Underwood HP or there's a local ammo maker and I use their HP ammo. IWB Galco holster at my 1 o'clock and I generally don't carry an extra magazine.

See post #448.

I've had it for about 2 weeks now and I've put about 300 rounds through it. So far, very happy, though I have to admit, it's taking longer to break in than my "cheap" Taurus did. But the recoil spring is getting better, last time out only had like 4 out of 100 fail to eject. This is also a striker fired weapon, not a hammer fired, which was a big selling point to me anyway.

This gun is super accurate. The 4 inch barrel and the 9mm of course make it moreso than my 3.5 inch Taurus in .45. A breeze to break down and as I mentioned before, the trigger is flat out amazing. Follow up shots are great with this thing. I'd recommend it, for the price I got it (539.00) it was a no brainer. The holster that it comes with is a nice little bonus, good for out on the range, and it comes also with 2 15 round mags.

Happy Shooting!
