Herm Q&A

Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 9/2
Sep 02, 2006, 6:44:31 PM

HERM EDWARDS: “I think this is a business where you understand there’s constant change. Our roster is probably still not set. At this time I think we have the guys that we feel right now are the best players for this football team.

“I said when I first took this job that talent alone wasn’t going to keep you here. You had to be an available player; you had to be a coachable player and you had to fit what we were asking guys to do. For the most part, we have the best 53 to help us win games. That’s how we looked at it but there are still lots that could happen between now and the next couple of weeks. You can build the bottom of your roster that way. But the guys who made this team are here because they were available and they were coachable, and they were the best players in our estimation.”

Q: Why keep four running backs?

EDWARDS: “Because they were the best players. You can fall into the trap of saying you don’t need four running backs. Well, you need good football players. I believe that, Carl (Peterson) believes that. That’s what you do. You keep your best players and we felt that at certain positions you do that.”

Q: What are the chances that these 53 are the guys you are going to practice with on Wednesday?

EDWARDS: “Oh, there’s a pretty good chance. Anything can happen, of course, with 620 some guys will be released today. There will be some jockeying for position. Some teams will call when they see certain teams have four running backs, some offensive linemen or defensive linemen where you’re heavy at. Other teams will call if they need a guy or two. You never show your hand and we’ll sit pat with them. They’re the guys who are supposed to be here, but anything can happen.”

Q: Charles Rogers was cut by the Lions today. Would you have any interest in him?

EDWARDS: “At this point, we feel good with our five (receivers). That’s not to say we won’t look at some players. He’s a guy who’s obviously a high pick and for some reason it didn’t work out for him in Detroit. We haven’t talked about that yet but we have this week and next week to discuss players like that. It’s not yes or no; we haven’t talked about it.”

Q: Those two spare receivers are rookies. Are you comfortable with that?

EDWARDS: “Obviously because they’re it.”

Q: But you didn’t have much of a choice since you didn’t have a whole lot of veterans in camp?

EDWARDS: “We had some guys that were here before that were in Europe. We kept two young players. We kept two talented players that we felt were an upgrade for us, have the potential to help us on special teams. I said that right away: if you’re going to be the fourth or fifth receiver most of the time (you) don’t play in the game unless you play with four wideouts. We don’t play with a lot of four wideouts because I don’t feel comfortable taking Tony Gonzalez off the field. We’re not going to be a four wideout offense.

“They had good springs, good training camp, and played pretty well – especially number 80 (Webb) in the preseason.”

Q: They were head and shoulders above the other candidates like McIntyre and Curry?

EDWARDS: “I think they had an upside and are going to get better and were good (special) teams’ guys.”

Q: One of the players on the list was Carlos Hall. He was hurt all the time. Is that why he’s gone?

EDWARDS: “I keep saying you have to be a coachable player but you also have to be available. Carlos had done a good job here but we just decided to move in a different direction. He wasn’t a guy at this point in time who was really deserving in making this team.

“You have to work. You have to come to work every day. I really believe that and I told players in the spring that you won’t make this team by default. You have to earn your way and when you tell that to your football team you’d better make sure you do it as coaches. I have to make some hard decisions but they’re really not hard. The film doesn’t lie and if you don’t get on film that’s not my fault.”

Q: Junior Siavii is sort of in that same category except he’s a young guy. Did you feel there wasn’t going to be much of an upside there?

EDWARDS: “I’m not going to say that. He’s probably a guy for us that wasn’t going to fit with what we were going to do. That’s not fair to the player, so that being said he has an opportunity to go to some other place.”

Q: Can you elaborate on that?

EDWARDS: “He wasn’t going to fit. Certain shoes you like but they don’t fit. They look good but they just don’t fit. You’ve been in the shoe store before. You keep putting on that same shoes because you really want them but they just don’t fit.”

Q: What about keeping only three quarterbacks. Are you going to go out and look for a veteran?

EDWARDS: “We’ve got two veteran quarterbacks already and one young one. Obviously that was the best situation. You look at the guys who have run the offense and a young guy in Brodie Croyle we feel he’s a guy who has a lot of potential. You saw some of that when he played the last couple of games. He just needs to grow into the offense. He’s a quick learner, a quick study. The great things that he has that you want quarterbacks to acquire as they play that position: charisma and persona in the huddle. He has that already, has that presence in the huddle, and now he just has to learn the system and get better technically. I think the guy has a good upside and I feel good about us at quarterback.”

Q: Do you like where you are with seven or eight days before your first game?

EDWARDS: “Yeah, but you’re not where you want to be. No one is. That’s the great thing about our league. You build your football team as the season goes along. We have to be better after four weeks than you are the first four and after eight you have to be a lot better. I think we’ll do that. There are some things that we obviously should have done better in the pre-season but we didn’t.

“But the thing I learned about this football team is I know the strengths and weaknesses and I think you have to make sure you go into the season not kidding yourself in the pre-season. You have to find the holes that you have and from there you’ve got to help the players and then play to your strengths. We have to do that now. We have to game plan. We know what our players do well. We know some things that they need some help with. That’s the process of pre-season football.”

Q: Are you concerned that the offensive line will be all right?

EDWARDS: “I think it’ll work out fine. I think we have some young guys and the acquisition of Kyle (Turley) was great. In the spring people wondered why we would do that. Why another tackle? Well, I’m glad we did that. It kind of worked out. He’s gotten better. I like Kyle Turley’s presence. He’s a guy that when you play a football game you want him on your side. He’s got a good guy next to him in Brian Waters. The right tackle has a good player next to him in Will Shields. I think that helps your tackles when you have those guards. That’s what we have. We have (Will) Svitek who is a swing guy, Black who has played there and Bober is a guy who can swing at the guard and center. We have some guys who if there are guys nicked they can go in and play.”

Q: Your thoughts on the first two weeks with games against Cincinnati and Denver.

EDWARDS: “We can’t change the schedule. (Cincinnati) is 6-2 on the road (in ‘05) and Marvin’s done a great job. They were 11-5 last year and won their division. They’re a playoff team. Denver’s a playoff team and won our division. They’ll test your mettle right away – one at home and one on the road.

“I think it’s great. I think you find out a lot about your football team. You have no choice. A lot of people were wondering in the off-season that their quarterback might not be there (for the opener.) You know what? I’m glad he’s playing. I want him to play. I would be disappointed if they came in here without their starting quarterback. I want to see how good we are.

“That’s just me. That’s the kind of player I was and I’ve always been that way. I want to play against the best guys. I don’t want to sugar-coat it. Let’s find out about ourselves. They’ve scored a lot of points the last couple of weeks. They’re a machine. That’s great.

Some of his analogies are strange.

Go Webb! I hope he turns into a very good receiver for the Chiefs.

Remember some of Gunthers comments when he was the head coach. He didn't make a whole lot of sense either. It's rambling.

I think coaches just get tired of answering questions when their minds are on so much more you know, like the gameplan.

Oh really? Sounds like Herm plans on trading one of our players. I wonder who? Could we really get something for Dee Brown or Derrick Ross?
