So a player runs off towards the opponent goal. There are now three possibilities. His team doesn't get the ball as expected, his team gets it and launches it to him and defense has to you know, play defense and get back, or his team just chooses hold on to the ball and move it up the field under more control. How is that bad for flow?

Though I'm not an expert at soccer strategy, my assumption is that offensive players would just camp out right next to the goal the entire time, and the approach would shift from passing and control to dumping the ball in from everywhere and hoping that your guys get there first. It would basically be nothing but corner kicks (in terms of a scramble for the ball) all the time.

It might be more exciting in some ways, but a ton of the strategy would be lost.

I don't think strategy would be lost it would just be changed. If a player wants to leave the defensive postition early and weaken his team's defense let him, the other team should figure out how to take advantage.

Also, they could have a sort of line of scrimmage to prevent guys from just camping next to the goal. Like a line 3/4 up the field or the midline or something similar that you can't cross until your team takes possession. I realize it won't change but I just think the game could be more exciting.

Sounds like the hockey rule. I could be intrigued by that, though as you mention, it'll never change.

Yeah, I would like to see them use the goal box line that way, once inside there then no offisides. That and I always thought it would be fun in both basketball and soccer if they went the route of hockey where players could switch in and out at will by running off the field.

I still think the worst things about soccer are all the damn actors, and the refs absolute refusal to ever call a hand ball or defensive penalty in the box.

Limiting goalies to only being able to kick in their own half is ridiculous.
