Gretz:Quick Thoughts on First 53-Man Roster

Quick Thoughts on First 53-Man Roster

August 30, 2008 - Bob Gretz |

Nobody can ever say Herm Edwards doesn’t back up what he says.

The Chiefs head coach said the roster needed to be younger. He said that over a year ago. He’s gone about making it happen.

The initial 53-man roster for the Chiefs has 31 players who are 25 years old or younger. That’s 59 percent of the roster. Twenty-two of those players are 23 years old or younger. Ten of those players are 22 years old or younger.

Until there is some stability in the 53 names on the roster, we won’t spend much time analyzing the early results. That time will come probably Sunday night, once the Chiefs put in their waiver claims on any players that interest them around the league.

If the Chiefs find talent somewhere else, which of the current 53 would go? I would rank the bottom five on the Chiefs roster this way based on the current roster numbers, production in pre-season and other factors:

* 53 - LB Napoleon Harris.
* 52 - CB Maurice Leggett
* 51 - TE J.P. Foschi
* 50 - WR Jeff Webb
* 49 - RB Dantrell Savage/R B.J. Sams

The moves in this first wave provided few surprises. They would be limited to Harris making the team and both Savage and Sams being on the roster. Harris did nothing exceptional in the off-season or pre-season to keep his spot on the roster and he has no future with the team. I’ve got to believe if the Chiefs can find a young linebacker out there that Harris will be the first to go.

The decision on Savage/Sams obviously came down to Sams’ hamstring injury. There’s been no word out of Arrowhead on what Friday medical tests disclosed on Sams. Rest assured that Savage’s fumble to open the game on Thursday night combined with the injury created this situation. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Savage can provide something else besides returns; Sams is a returner only.

The Chiefs are top heavy at halfback with five guys on the roster. They are also heavy in the secondary with 10 guys, including six corners. But those were the positions of strength for the Chiefs and Edwards was determined to keep the best players.

We’ll have plenty more in the coming 48 hours on the roster. But right now here’s what it looks like:

QUARTERBACK (3): Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen and Damon Huard.

HALFBACK (5): Larry Johnson, Kolby Smith, Jamaal Charles, Jackie Battle and Dantrell Savage.

FULLBACK (1): Mike Cox.

TIGHT END (3): Tony Gonzalez, Brad Cottam and J.P. Foschi.

WIDE RECEIVER (5): Dwayne Bowe, Devard Darling, Will Franklin, Maurice Price and Jeff Webb.

OFFENSIVE LINE (8): Branden Albert, Brian Waters, Rudy Niswanger, Adrian Jones, Damion McIntosh, Herb Taylor, Barry Richardson and Wade Smith.

DEFENSIVE LINE (8): Turk McBride, Tank Tyler, Glenn Dorsey, Tamba Hali, Alfonso Boone, Ron Edwards. T.J. Jackson and Brian Johnston.

LINEBACKERS (6): Derrick Johnson, Pat Thomas, Donnie Edwards, Demorrio Williams, Wes Dacus and Napoleon Harris.

CORNERBACKS (6): Pat Surtain, Brandon Flowers, Brandon Carr, Dimitri Patterson, Tyron Brackenridge and Maurice Leggett.

SAFETIES (4): Jarrad Page, Bernard Pollard, Jon McGraw and DaJuan Morgan.

SPECIAL TEAMS (4): B.J. Sams, Nick Novak, Dustin Colquitt and J.P. Darche.

1. I don't know what they see in TE Foschi. I wish the would have kept Michael Allen instead. I hope they bring Allen back to the PS.

2. We seem to be really light at OT. We need another G.

3. Our LBs suck.

4. We're heavy on CBs. They should let Leggett go.

5. Sams should be let go.

Claythan notified me that it is because he can block, but I thought that is what Cottam was for and if he's the 3rd what the hell? I guess Cottam has a history but whatever. I'm not crushed over the Allan release, but I had some hope for the kid. He has very nice hands and showed something in last years PS.

I'd be OK with guys that don't suck. I'm glad Alibai is gone. I was concerned Herm's boy was going to get playing time.

Affirmative.

Yeah, probably. Maybe he is more of a special teams guy. Not sure.

Could not agree more.

I'm still hoping they keep Savage. This team went through 5 RBs last year:

LJ - Broken
Priest - Broken FOREVER
Kolby - Broken
Gilbert Harris - Broken (I think)
Jackie Battle

So since Savage is servicable at RB I think he adds a lot to the roster other than returner if we get bit by the injury bug again.

Foshci threw some key blocks in the Miami game, other than that I really hadn't seen him do anything productive. Hopefully our 3rd TE will never have to be a factor.

The third TE is always going to be a factor in jumbo formations. If the Chiefs go with a three-back set we could see him next to Cox, too.

What a crazy roster. This is going to be a fascinating season in a lot of ways. To me, perhaps the most interesting and potentially fun to watch since '03.

There are so many things to look for on offense alone ...

- Oline development. Particularly Albert and Niswanger. Can we grow as a group? Will we actually be able to generate a productive run game? If we need to, can we out-muscle anybody? Will we be able to consistently provide solid pass protection?

- Receivers. Will they gain confidence as the year unfolds or tighten up? Will we see crisp routes and maybe even some separation on occasion? Do we have a legitimate #2 who can take coverage pressure off Bowe and TG?

- RBs. How will our depth be utilized? Will we see multiple back sets? Can LJ return to form? Can he flourish in a cut-back scheme? How much of Kolby and Charles will we see? In what situations? Is Cox the real deal?

- TEs. Is Cottam more than just a blocker? Will he emerge as the TG's heir? Will we be passing often (or at all) out of a 2 TE formation? Does TG still have an all-pro season in him? Can we get him the ball?

- OC. How well will the mysterious and inscrutable Chan gameplan for the talent he has? Will he ask too much, or not enough? If he makes mid-game adjustments, can the guys respond?

- QB. Can Croyle get a win?

What a year.
