Play Calling and Audibles?
Last night they showed the length of wording on one of the offensive play calls. Christ! The thing was just a couple of chapters short of qualifying for being a novel!

Why does this have to be so difficult? Why couldn't it just be as simple as something like "Blue 33" ?

Then when you get to the line, and see the play is screwed, you might have time to audible into something that might work, and not require all the players to have a degree in quantum physics to know what is going on.

I'm sure it does. But something like "Blue" might be the formation. Play 33 out of that formation might tell everyone what to do.

Each section of the playcall establishes what a given unit is supposed to do--receivers, line, RBs, and QB.

Everyone but the QB just needs to know their section of the playcall. There is a little bit more variance in the OL, but it's not terribly difficult. It's really only hard on the QB.

Example: Brown right f short 2 flanker drive

Brown is the formation: Two wide receivers split wide with a tight end. Fullback is directly behind the QB and the RB is to his right.

This is also known as a "Near" formation.

Right indicates that the strong side of the play (where the TE is) is on the right hand side.

(Were the TE on the left, the formation would be a "Far" formation)

F short tells the flanker (strong side) to motion closer to the tight end before the snap.

2-Jet is the protection scheme: Four blockers block the weak side of the play, leaving the RT and FB blocking the strong side.

The TE and flanker read the defense, sitting down if there's a hole in the zone. If it's man, the TE runs a quick in route, the flanker a crossing route, and the HB a quick hitter in the flat.
