Better Call Saul

As I am sure many of y'all already know, a spinoff of "Breaking Bad" titled "Better Call Saul" will be airing in 2014. This is going to be a prequel to Breaking Bad and will be based on the character of Saul Goodman from "Breaking Bad."

I, for one, will be watching. I'm sure the majority of all of you other "Breaking Bad" fans will be as well. Might as well get the discussion going sooner rather than later.

So... what are your hopes, expectations and/or concerns with the show? Here are some of mine:

Hopes: I hope to see Saul do his thing in the courtroom. I hope to see strong, unique supporting characters. I hope to see Breaking Bad foreshadowing. I hope he has an intriguing paralegal and/or assistant. I hope to see Breaking Bad characters such as Fring, Mike, etc...whoever. I hope the show kicks ass.

Expectations: I don't expect it to be as good as "Breaking Bad" (because nothing else is, really), but I expect it to be good since Vince Gilligan is writing. I somewhat expect it to have an even balance of comedy and drama...since Saul undeniably provides a substantial amount of comedic relief in "Breaking Bad." I expect to see "courtroom Saul." I expect the "Breaking Bad" references and character cameos to be less than what I hope. If it isn't even a fraction as good as "Breaking Bad," I expect it to be better than 95% of everything else on TV, since there is some shitty shit on TV these days.

Concerns: I'd be a liar if I were to say that I didn't think this show has potential of flopping and certainly failing to meet the presumed high expectations of the audience. Don't get me wrong, I think it will be good... but I think it COULD suck if not executed properly. My main concern is Saul ultimately proving himself to be a "little dab will do ya" type of character, which would lead to a show centered around his character not working out. I am hoping that the character of Saul will not be so over-used and constantly over the top, that he becomes annoying to me, thus ruining his character for me altogether... Not saying I think this will be how it goes down...just saying I think there is a CHANCE of this being the case, which prompts me to believe that a strong supporting cast is VITAL in terms of the amount of success/quality this show will accumulate. All in all, I don't think VG will steer us in an unfortunate direction though...I think they'll pull it off.

Kim is wallowing in self hate after getting Jimmy off, I think seeing Chuck kill himself and Jimmy devolve into Saul will just be enough that she decides she can't be a part of his life.

Chuck I think is doing DBT a form of theropy when he is walking in the store. Calling out what you see keeps you focused on the present and whats going on and not going into your crazy head.

Something we’ve discussed in the writers room is: What’s really the difference between a person who does bad things and feels bad about it, and someone who does bad things and doesn’t feel bad about it? There’s some total of people that are basically fine either way. Chuck is being very tough on Jimmy, and he’s not completely wrong!

The "I don't really care about you" line is a point I alluded to last season. These guys are a decade+ apart in age - the time to really form close bonds with his sibling was just never there. For the last 30 years, Jimmy's just been the screwup little brother that he had to bail out even though he probably only lived with him for 5-6 years.

And I really found that speech compelling and fair. And it's an open question - Jimmy keeps saying he feels bad but in the end, can he really? Like Chuck said, if your actions don't change, how much impact can it really have had on you?

McKean is right - Chuck's arc had wrapped up once Hamlin played the card that effectively wrote him out of further activity. Truth be told, Hamlin's arc is largely wrapped up as well unless something further happens with Kim. But nothing further really needs happen there so any return to HHM would be little more than writers filling space with interesting characters.

As for Chuck's head shot - every single one of us who spends an appreciable amount of time with someone knows exactly how to break that person. I can identify a killing stroke on every close friend/family member I have and that's universal for all of us because that relationship yields familiarity and candor. Basic human kindness keeps us from ever leveling that blow, even in the midst of some of our most vicious conflicts with people.

But Chuck was out of ****s to give at that point. I suspect he meant exactly what he said but even if he didn't, he knew exactly how to cut Jimmy the deepest and took the shot.

But the biggest thing about the show to me was Jimmy's handling of the old biddies. Did he really sabotage his payday? I couldn't tell if the settlement was moving forward or not. If not, I've lost a lot of respect for Jimmy. For as smart and cunning as he is, he can be a pussy when it matters the most.

Eh, he probably only delayed his payday. I suspect HHM could get in the mud and try to use his misconduct to strip him of his rights to the common fund but they'd have to establish that he actually damaged it. Then again, this may lead to them losing a trial outright so who knows?

They don't know if the settlement is moving forward. The old lady may still decide she doesn't have the stomach for the fight. If so, the settlement still wraps (and HHM may pursue Jimmy for damages if they can establish that they'd have gotten more via a trial verdict. Maybe a tortious interference action but man damages will be tough to prove).

I don't think either Jimmy or Chuck is a sociopath either, but certainly Chuck is closer to one than Jimmy. Jimmy just based on his actions would appear to be moreso, but he has remorse and his conning is kind of what he's always known. Many times he cons for even a greater good. Chuck is just a manipulative asshole with little regard and compassion. He will imitate compassion on his exterior appearance at times, but I don't think he really means it.

That's fine. Men usually want more meat, than women prefer to have. My first reaction Monday night at that pajama scene was noticing her butt size. I was surprised for an actress unless she's a Bette Midler. I don't see how squats give a gal a big butt though. It looks like it just her body type even when firm and tone.
