What is something that is secretly cool about your job?

I'm not talking about salary or vacation benefits. I'm talking about stuff that's not obvious to an outsider and will never be mentioned as a benefit, but nonetheless it's kind of cool and brings you a little enjoyment in your workday.

For me, a secret cool thing is that I get to go behind the scenes at tons of jobs. I've gotten to tour the back operations at everything from jails to caulk factories to college presidents' offices, and I get to hear about their industries and challenges and how they view the world. I really like doing this.

Another secret cool thing is that when we do focus groups we often get to take home pizza and brownies.

The third cool thing is that I get to know all sorts of great internet places for data. I'm always hunting around and finding odd data sets. Granted, not everyone may think that's cool, but I do.

What about y'all?

I work in advertising. When budgets run out of scope, we are frequently paid by clients in tickets, merchandise and goods rather than an actual monetary compensation. I rebranded the Royals team store a couple years ago, for example, and they paid us a flat retainer fee, but then threw in Crown Seats for 10 games. Totally worth it. The Sprint Center and AEG are another client that does this. We share a suite there with a law firm...8 tickets to any event that happens...they are rarely spoken for, so I just request what I'd like to go to ahead of time and it happens. I just got 4 seats to NIN.

Even after 20 years, it still an amazing feeling to hold something in your hands that you designed.

I spend some of my day taking orders from auto repair shops or DIY mechanics for tools and parts. Almost every customer is happy and thankful because we keep a huge inventory on the shelf and can get it to them quickly. It is GREAT to deal with mostly positive people rather than negativity.

That sounds like something an architectural engineer would do. I'm an electrical engineer.

Where I work, there was a desire to improve overall health the last few years, so we now have a doctor's office on site with the CEO's personal physician (who now takes our health plan) available to all employees 3 days a week, and staffed the other two days by his PA and a nurse.

It has really helped people be more open to see a doctor for preventative stuff that we often postpone and delay due to busy schedules. He has helped catch a couple of cases of cancer very early in people who otherwise would have held out alot longer to seek medical advice.

I've always envied people in advertising and several acquaintances who work in the industry get unbelievable perks and places they go, always top notch and first class. No riding in the back of the bus or the cheap seats.

While living in San Francisco a decade ago, my ex-girlfriend got invited by her ad agency rep to the Fox Sports booth for a Giants baseball game. The food and drink in the suite was incredible and the seats were wide and very comfy.

I also attended a holiday party on a yacht in New York for BBDO years back. What a highfalutin event that was!

I could get used to that type of living.
