Trent Green Q/a

Got this off KCChiefs.com

Trent Green Q&A - June 21, 2001
One what it means to potentially lose Sylvester Morris to injury:
"It’s a huge loss. Sylvester’s had a great offseason. He’s really picked up the offense well and he had a good understanding of what’s going on. It’s something that I’ve been through, I’ve been through a knee injury. I’m going to be in Sylvester’s ear from today on to get him to continue to work hard. I think it is as tough mentally as it is physically. You come in day after day and you’re doing the rehab thing and you’re grinding away and there’s some days that you just don’t feel like doing it and those are the days that you have to work your hardest. I’m going to be in his ear and try and stay on top of it because I plan on connecting with him, obviously it’s not going to be this year, but I plan on connecting with him for many years to come."
On who best fits into Sylvester’s role:
"We have a lot of guys who are playing a number of different positions. Larry Parker has done really well and they have him trying out two or three different wide receiver spots. Snoop [Minnis] has stepped up and played well when given the chance. They worked him in there today. I think those are the two guys that are front-running at that "X" position. And then there will be more people who will come forward because we do two, three and four wide receiver sets and so right now its hard to ask a guy to learn a new position and then all of a sudden somebody gets hurt and you have to learn another position. So in this offense you have to know how to play a number of different wide receiver positions. So that’s going to be hard to find somebody to fill that void and when they do it’s just a matter of adjusting your top four or five guys and getting them in the right spots."

On the impression he made on his teammates:
"Hopefully, it sends a message to the other guys on the offense. They get a chance to see me a little bit. It’s one thing to throw routes against the air. The lineman haven’t really seen me much, the tight ends and backs haven’t seen much so, hopefully, the last couple of days I’ve been able to make some impressions."

On what he will be doing until training camp:
"We’ll be here. I’ll be rehabbing. My family is moving next week. We found a home here and we’ll be moving here to Kansas City next week. My commitment is to this team and doing whatever we can to win, so I’ll be here until training camp just working on my knee. I’ve got guys lined up to come in and throw and we’ll just continue making progress toward the season."
It sure looks like Sylvester is out for the year by this one comment from Green

Obviously it won't be this year is the key thing to remember. I want to wish Sylvester luck with his recovery. Coming back from a knee injury I'm sure is no picnic.

English Standard Version (ESV)

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

It sure seems Green understands the concepts of Team and Leadership. The statement above shows several elements of both.

Concern for a fellow team member even though it will not benefit Green immediately.

Willingness to use your bad experience to improve the chances of another.

Desire to guide and push Slymo through the painful rehab process

Seeing the benefit to the team long term by helping Slymo now.

Truthfully, probably a simple statement along the lines of we will miss his talents and hope he recovers quickly.

I doubt if it would have been more or less than that.

Green sure is well-spoken and genuine. When he said "I've got guys lined up to come in and throw", did he mean receivers coming to train with him to catch passes, and run routes with him on their own? I am sure this is pretty common practice at many clubs, but seeing as Green knows the offense better than the WRs, that could be a big help to everyone if they trained in that manner.

I hope Larry Parker steps up. Nobody on the board seems to have any confidence in him, and it's not hard to see why, but you never know. After all, we have barely seen his game. He's hardly a world beater, having spent his 2 seasons on the bench, but there's no reason he wouldn't benefit from this new coaching staff and scheme as much as anyone, so there's a chance he can do what we need him to do.

It would really be interesting to see how our year would have been if LP would have been able to hold on to the football in the Colt's game.

Cormac,

I'm not down on Larry, but have to agree with most that he's unproven.

There's reason to hope, though -- Joe Horne...

Larry Parker has always been intruiging to me. I though he was a good pick when we made it because severalpre draftreports were listing him as a sleeper in the draft. Last yearChiefs coaches were commenting on how he needsto improve the way he turns his hips and goes upfield. Hopefully our coaches this year get him on track...

A new coaching staff may be just what Larry Parker needed to give him a fresh outlook.

I still blame Goonther for shattering Parker's confidence, or at least stifling his aggressiveness.

Whether or not Parker's fumble cost the Chiefs that '99 game against Indy is not the issue (although I must reiterate that I strongly disagree with just about everyone on that), but the fact that Goonther blamed that loss publicly on Parker's fumble.

Until that, Parker had shown some real promise, even on that fumbled punt return. Since, Parker has played tentatively, at best.
He's played like a man that fears the consequences of another mistake.

I am not a Marty fan, as some of you might know, but in a similiar situation, he would not have placed blame on the player, but would instead have used it as a teaching tool. For that, I give him credit.

Goonther was just a moron that had no business being in the position of HC.

Sorry to have posted and run, but I agree with what you're all saying about Parker. He needs to put the Colts faux-pas behind him, and was never going to be able to do that with Gun around. Maybe his "sleeper" ability recognised at draft time can show up now under the new staff. Wasn't his problem always that he carried the ball away from his body? I think I remember that being a knock on him. It sounds pretty coachable to me. If Andre O'Neal and Larry Atkins have a chance (in the fan's minds) to contribute this season, Parker probably does too. We'll miss Sly though :(
